I've known of Pearl Jam for many years, but have only heard Vitalogy previously which is OK without any real stand-out tracks, plus the iconic 'Alive' from this album. However, having read the recommendations in Amazon I decided to take a punt and after only one listen I'm really glad that I did. It sounds fresh with great vocals and heavy guitars: classic rock and miles better than the drivel played on the readily-available channels. Chalk one up for the oldies!

Whatever people tell me about the ramones: i always say that these guys defined punk music. Still today The Jam is a classic band that will always have a place in my album collection. This CD however is overdoing everything. Punk rock albums are usually very short and having to listen to 20 songs that do all sound extremely simmilar can get tedious. More than this I believe that punk bands very designed for live performances: they had a great attitude to live acts which made them amazing to listen to. The CD takes the heart out of this genre and for that i mark it down. Also there are a few songs could have done without.
81/100

I liked the vast majority of this albums songs. All Pearl Jams hits are featured. A few reason why I have not given a 5/5 star review are: The remastered songs (2 on each album). Theyre just not as good as the originals. Also the album structure I feel is not right. Instead of charting PJ's career chronologically (Grunge-Post Grunge etc), songs are placed in what appears to be random order, although the first disk is a lot heavier. Personally I would have done it chronologically, but you cant please everyone! The album cover is a little naff, the sleeves make it difficult to get CD's out of and often the CD's will fall out if your carrying the album about, what was wrong with a hard case?!
Still a great album, although if you have the ... Read More:

When I first heard Vs I thought, well it's alright, not as good as Ten though. Indeed it probably is not as good as its predecessor, Ten will perhaps forever remain as the Pearl Jam's greatest album. However, after a few listens my feelings toward this album went from `alright' to `amazing'. This album is a lot louder and a lot angrier then Ten but not as dark. Songs like Go, Animal, Rearvewmirror and Leash probably set the tone for the album as loud, solid anthems; but it is often in the quieter tracks, the Daughters, the indifferences where the album really shines. Both those 2 songs are one of PJ's best. Eddie was probably at his lyrical best on this album in the songs already mentioned and in his awesome story telling in Dissident and Elderly Lady ... ..this was the trio at their best, my fave album by them..contains excellent tracks (thick as thieves, smithers jones and the most underrated jam track ever wasteland) go and buy it at this price it`s a steal!! and then buy all their other albums.
Release Date August 04, 1997
one of my personal faves this album, and in my opinion when the jam"sound" began, the jam were not just a singles band as jam fans loved the album tracks just as much, polydor wanted pretty green released as the single from this album, but paul and producer vic heaven insisted on"start" which in turn gave the band their second number one, thats entertainment was also released as an import single as it did so well in holland and charted high in the uk,with a new era of jam fans coming along this album is a good place to start, besides the two tracks mentioned above theres some hidden gems on here, the brilliant"man in the corner shop.but im different now,boy about town and set the house ablaze stand up to the test of time and should have been hits in thier own right.buy this album ... This album just failed to excite me. I cannot find a stand out track. It's not necessarily terrible. It's just i find my self with no reason to listen to this album again
Release Date August 04, 1997
MUST BE GOOD COS IT'S THE JAM INNIT? WELL SORRY, BUT NO, ONE GOOD SONG DOESN'T MAKE A GREAT OR EVEN GOOD ALBUM. ALL THE PEOPLE WHO GIVE THIS ALBUM 4 OR 5 STARS SHOULD HAVE A LONG HARD HONEST THINK ABOUT HOW INSPIRING THIS ALBUM REALLY IS. PERSONALY, LISTENING TO IT NOW 25 YEARS OR SO SINCE I FIRST HEARD IT, I FIND IT DULL AS DITCH WATER. HAS A MORE BANAL SONG THAN "IT'S TOO BAD" (LYRICALLY OR MUSICALLY) EVER BEEN WRITTEN? I DOUBT IT. ENGLISH ROSE MAKES MY TOES CURL. DULL, DULL, DULL.

After the chaotic Vitalogy Pearl Jam came out with this, one of my favourite Pearl Jam records. It may not have songs that immediately stand out (with the exceptions of Red Mosquito and Present Tense) but in a complete reversal from Vitalogy, No Code compensates a lack of singles with a complete album, that's flows, and flows beautifully. With enough listens some songs will stick with you but I still maintain the album is best appreciated in its full form. Well, by full I mean listen continuously from tracks 1 to 10. This is defiantly a quieter album than it's predecessors. Those looking for anthems like Alive, Once and Go will be should look elsewhere. What we have here is an honest and great album, which may not be dark like Ten but is still absolutely kick ass.
