This latest TV advertised set has 20 tracks from the America's first soul group. All the original 50's well known songs are included, except for "You'll Never, Never Know (I Care)". Have they included "You'll Never Know", which is a different tune entirely, by mistake ? However, it's the oddities that make this compilation so intriguing. If you buy the album for Tony Williams smooth lead vocals, you will not be disappointed by the hits and versions of standards like "September In The Rain" and you might even be pleasantly surprised by rare tracks like "I Don't Know Why", presumably with Zola Taylor on lead. The Best of the Platters

I bought this at the request of a friend of my mum's. She lives in a nursing home and has taken an interest in revisiting music of her youth. I've bought several CDs on her behalf but as she and my mum listened to this one she said "It's the best yet". It brought back memories of dancing with her husband when they were both young. She said to mum, "after you go I listen to it again and have a good cry." Her husband had died several years ago.

The Best Of - Volume 2

With all the really famous songs being on the first volume, this compilation is inevitably weaker. If the original intention had been to release two volumes, it is reasonable to assume that the big hits would have been split between them. I am therefore assuming that this compilation was released because of the sales generated by the original volume.

Dedicated Platters fan know that the truly definitive compilation is the 50-track double CD Magic touch - Anthology, which is still in print. Even though this collection avoids all the obvious tracks, 17 of the 18 tracks here are included in that double CD, the exception being a cover of Apple blossom time. Still, this collection is at a nice price, especially if you've already got the first ... Read More:

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: 20 Greatest Hits

I bought this CD just because my mother loved this group. I remember her soft voice sang the songs "Great Pretender", "Only You", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". Sadly she passed away 2 years ago and I desperately need something, everything, to connect me with her again. I was pleasantly surprised that I also enjoy the rest of the songs, even dancing to the beat of "With this Ring". Some of the songs are not as 'olde-worlde' as I expected before(and I'm only in my 30-s), but instead have a modern, jazzy feel, and the vocals are excellent. I guess now I can find an ally in Ray Quinn (remember him, X-factor 2006 runner-up? No? Ah well, it happens all the time).
Buy this for your parents/grandparents or for yourself to appreciate this group.
