I have the first 6 or 7 albums (on vinyl) by Robert Cray and I believe this is the one to buy first. Possibly the best known songs are the title track and 'Smoking Gun' but really they're all great, especially the first five tracks. He can definitely play but it's the singing and the song writing which come to the fore.

I am a great admirer of this under-rated bluesman. When I first listened to the cd it did nothing at all, then after a couple of plays...it is exquisite ,superb songs, what a voice, guitar phrasing and overall production. This is superb musicianship from a man who's paid his dues! Go buy !

I think this is a great cd and an excellent introduction to Robert Cray.
What I like about him is not just his ability to play but also he has a very good voice and range of vocals.

Another good album, and I've got over half a dozen of his already. The three tracks that really stand out for me are What You Need (Good Man), Your Pal and Back Door Slam.
I like to make up compilations of my favorite tracks of an artist I really like and the three tracks above are excellent, especially Back Door Slam, just put it on repeat. Bob dosen't usually use effects and I can only describe it as a little like the Harry Lime Theme, and it works brilliantly. Thers's also some intense finger work and I love his voice and the way he picks and bends notes.
Two of the tracks, Survivor and Distant Shore are OK musically but have a strong reference to Desert Storm/Military Service.
Glad to see and hear he and his band are still ... Read More:

If you are looking for a way into blues music then Robert Cray is certainly a good place to start. This is Cray's second album and worth a place in anyone's collection. Blues songs always tell stories, and this cd is packed with songs of love, hate, despair, hope, relationships, and more. Cray's soulful voice, backed by the band's tight flowing rhythm section and hot saxaphones, is a pleasure to hear. Cray's work has 'class' written all over it, listen to 'Phone Booth', Bad Influence', and 'Where Do I Go From Here' for starters. This album has many strengths, with over half of the material original, and is fresh and relevant on each listening. Nice one, Bob! Go for it - you won't be disappointed. Recommended.

This is a truely great album. Sure it doesn't have the fire of Southern Man (Neil Young) or Don't Turn Me Away (The late and great Roy Buchanon)but these songs stick with you so you can't let go. I first heard this album nearly twenty years ago when I knew nothing about the bllues and I still listen to it at least once a month. "At Last" and "Laugh Out Loud" are the highlights and I recommend that anyone who likes the blues or even just good middle of the road music really should buy this album.
