Anthology: Through The Years

The fact that this is the first review I have been moved to right since I was in school (I'm now 21) demonstrates just how highly I rate this. I'd seriously never really heard of Tom Petty until about 2 months ago, out of curisoity I borrowed it off a friends Dad and was blown away at how awesome this stuff is. Easily the best double album I own as there is literally not a bad track, the only time I reach for the skip button is when I don't have time to listen to the whole thing and find myself being drawn to some tracks that I just have to listen to!!

Favourite tracks: 1,4,6,9,10,17,21,26,30,31,33 But 'Two Gunslingers' would have to be my favourite track, if I had to pick one.

An obscene abuse of the dynamic range of CD. Record companies should be ashamed of mutilating music like this.

Full Moon Fever

I grew up on this album and it is the place where I heard Tom Petty first. This album is light and fun and will have you hooked from the word go. Jeff Lynne's production and co-writing abilities compliment Tom's style perfectly and the album they crafted has become a classic. This has such wonderful tracks as 'Free fallin', I won't back Down', 'Runnin' Down A Dream' and many more. In fact I'd go so far as to say that there isn't a dud track on this album. The slowest track on the CD is 'Face in The crowd' and for sheer melancholy and feeling it can't be beaten. Greatest Hits

This album is probably one of the best places to start in your love affair with Tom Petty. Once you hear his music there's no going back. He has a wonderfully distinctive voice and can play both rocking upbeat songs, as well as laid back chilled out ones. There are so many brilliant songs on this compilation, it would be hard to pick out any one for special mention. Needless to say I highly recommend it!

Into The Great Wide Open

I enjoyed every track on this cd but none of them are groundbreakers. This guy has a voice a bit like Chris Rea's but more upbeat which is inevitable given the fast tempo and smooth melodies he sings.If you like country, rock or folk music I think you'll like Into The Great Wide Open.

'Damn The Torpedoes' is Pettys third album and was written at a time when he was fighting a legal battle with his record company. The anger and frustrations are clearly evident on this album and make it all the more forceful and potent. This album, more than any other, has produced what are now classed as Petty's main hits. From songs like 'Refugee', 'Here Comes My Girl', 'Even The Losers', to 'Don't Do Me Like That', you have the makings of a Petty best of album on one CD. 'Century City' is a strong song about his travels to Century City near LA, the place where the lawyers for the court case were, it is a touch cynical (as you might imagine) and just exquisite rock and roll. Wildflowers

Wildflowers is Tom Pettys second solo album and is the one he has gone on record as saying is probably his favourite album that he has made. Considering the amazing wealth of material that he has produced that is high praise indeed. This album is very chilled and laid back and yet it has the power to move you at a very fundamental level. From songs such as 'Crawling Back to You', 'Wreck Me', 'You Don't Know How It Feels' and one of my all time Petty favourites 'Time To Move On', you find yourself completely immersed in the story Petty is able to weave. Hard Promises

'Hard Promises' is one of Pettys most underrated albums. It is often overlooked in favour of his earlier work or his mega successful later output, but this album has it's own sound and some great tracks. 'Waiting' is one of the most well known from this album and it really is an amazing track, but tracks like 'Woman in Love (it's not me)' are just as powerful and the lyrics of this particular track are just awesome. The Stevie Nicks duet 'Insider' is a brilliant listen and sits perfectly in the middle of this album. This isn't always the first album I go to when I want a hit of Petty, but at the right time and place it is just superb to put on and soak up. Really fabulous debut album, on which there is not a duff track anywhere in sight. None of the available TP compilations can do it justice, because every track is a killer. The one criticism which can be levelled at this album, especially in the cd era, is the extremely short running time. This one clocks in at about only thirty minutes. But what a glorious thirty-minute slice of late seventies American rock. Indispensable.

Highway Companion

I am starting to get into Tom Petty's music, as a fan of the Travelling Wilburys and enjoying his performance at the Concert For George. This is my first foray into his solo music and I am very impressed.

Its opening track Saving Grace is upbeat, punchy and a great way to start the album. The lyrics are catchy but are also well thought out and intelligent, and it is easy to see why this was a single.

Square One is a really beautiful song which is rather introspective and which moved me.

Flirting With Time returns to the upbeat song although it masks a sad theme in its lyrics. It sounds very familiar without being generic.
