At the moment this is one of my favorite cd sets,i didnt know anything about toms music but am a big fan of classic country music and i saw that a fellow country fan (PD harris) had given this a good review,so i knew it would be good .enyway i now have a lot of toms music. This is a great set to start with ,it has a great selection of toms best songs although not all of toms best songs are here.It still is not possible to buy a set with all toms greatest songs altogether. songs included here include: mama bake a pie (my favorite).million miles to the city.ballad of forty dollers.i hope it rains at my funeral.the year that clayton delaney died.i cant dance.last of the drifters.a week in a country jail.the old side of town.ravishing ruby.old ... When Tom T Hall broke through in the UK there was a deluge of albums released and they didn'tcome out in the order of recording. In fact,In Search of a Song (his 2nd album) was the one I heard first, and I was amazed. At the end of the 60s,a Nashville performer was writing about real issues like A Trip To Hyden with any number of one liners to die for.But Tom could do irony as well with Little Lady Preacher which hums of sexual and religious tension.I played the album over and over each track a separate story of life, each story funny or sad or just addressing issues nobody in the USA wanted to know about, rural poverty, racism, and hypocracy.
The Rhymer and other Five and Dimers had a shock on it.Tom had recorded a song written by somebody else.Billy ... Read More:

Another two of Tom T.Halls Mercury albums from the early 1970s when his creative juices were flowing. At the time it seemed Tom was pouring out albums, each with songs that made you stop and listen. Looking back, it was incredible how productive he was, and of course it was a pace difficult to keep up. Not that these albums are full of filler, far from it. Included here are some great songs like Pamela Brown, which adapts to many artists, Leo Kottke performs a stunning version, and in the Bluegrass field too, it is superb. Good story ,the wistfulness of small town growing up. Also included is one of Toms real heartbreakers, She Gave Her Love To Jethro, which deals with love in all its meanings.
Perhaps the song most people will know is Old Dogs,Children ... Read More:

Twenty years after his breakthough, Mercury issued this 20 tracker, and whilst there are some iffy Greatest Hits combos out there, this issue is a real nugget. Wisely, the label eschews the Greatest Hits approach and instead assesses each quality that a song has. And it produces some surprises, in comes It Sure Can Get Cold In Des Moines, and Trip To Hyden, songs that came early in his career, but captured his ability to deliver a 2 minute snapshot of life, or, in Hydens case a tragic mining accident.
Personal favourites abound like The Ballad of Bill Crump, a lovely tale of a craftsman, and Homecoming, the first Tom T. Hall song I ever heard. I still find this song a revelation as it contrasts the music business life to the everyday business of family ... Read More:

Every now and then I occasionally come across a song I'd never
heard before and that really knocks me out leaving me breathless
because of its beauty. I purchased a TimeLife DVD set about
Country Legends. On the 1st of total 3 DVD's I heard and saw
the interpretation of such an incredible beautiful song that I
immediately started searching on which CD I could get it so I
can listen and listen and listen to it constantly. The song is
Old dogs, children and watermelon wine by Tom T. Hall and I
found it on this CD. It's the musical background that's so
fantastic + the lyrics and the way of singing, almost reciting,
each and every line. I couldn't care for the rest of the songs
but fortunately ... Read More:

Please note that this is a re-issue of an earlier compliation (Ultimate collection) with a different title and packaging but an identical track listing.
Tom wrote and recorded songs that told stories - little vignettes of everyday life. Other country singers did this too, but only as a part of what they did. For Tom, story songs were what mattered. You want typical love songs? Look elsewhere. Yes, Tom sometimes sang about love but, like everything else, he told it in a story.
This collection includes all his country top ten hits plus his own recording of Harper Valley PTA, a song that he wrote but which became a huge international hit for Jeannie C Riley. Her version, which sold over four million copies, topped the American charts but didn't ... Read More:
