This album is sheer class, from the song writing and the lyrics to the artwork and production value, it's a fantastic album. Complex rhythms on drums and bass complement the guitar lines beautifully, and Maynard's vocals are at their best. This album is almost like a musical epithany, it can bring you down or up... in the same song. Progressive songwriting of this quality has hardly been seen since the days of Floyd, and there's one thing which binds them all together. But remember kids, drugs are baaad!! (Just ask your local chemist.)

I tend to agree with Mikey all this pontification about what Tool songs mean or don't mean or whether tool is a metaphor for living a certain way blah blahblah is pointless. I am a massve Tool fan and have seen their musical scale and scope grow since the early nineties into what has to be said a fantastic album in 10,000 days which is a real grower unfairly criticised by a lot of you on Amazon early on release but......... I don't hang on their every word, know all their views on climate change, when they were born or whether they talk in riddles and nor do I look for little gimmicky types of hippyesque quotes or stuff from the band. If you haven't heard Tool yet, you must, this is one of the most perfect albums in rock history, every member has extreme talent and yet it's so modestly used. A beautifully sculpted album from beginning to end.

This was the first tool album i heard/bought, and I still recommend it as the best place to start for potential tool fans. To be honest, I've only heard one song from Opiate, so I can't compare the two, but the artwork for Opiate puts me off investigating further. Anyway, listening to this 10+ years later, it still holds up as a rawer, rockier offering from a talented band. Swamp Song, Prison Sex, Intolerance and Undertow are classics, but the whole album deserves, as usual, to be played in it's entirety. And seeing Swamp Song performed at London Wembley Arena last month was worth the admission alone.

Opiate

Its hard to believe the band that composed Lateralus wrote this isnt it?!
This is mostly an intelligent old skool metal album, but with a unique Tool twist. The live recordings are amazing quality.
This is an angry, angst ridden EP, and well worth the money, even if its only 6 songs. It is an awesome foundation for things to come.
And it contains songs that rank among Tools very best: Cold and Ugly, Hush

Vicarious [DVD]

This video differs from earlier ones in a way that you have to be a tool fan to realy sit throughout the whole 8 min. I wasn't a big tool fan, but after seeing 'Schism' video my life has never been the same if you know what I mean. It was so artistic and raw it appealed to everyone. 'Vicarious' on the contrary didn't have this effect on me.
On the other hand i praise the work put into making of 'Vicarious' ( i advise you to watch documentary first, you'll see video in a different perspective).
But to cut my story short - i did not like the graphics. And i don't mind at all that i have no idea what video is all about.

Lateralus

When I bought Lateralus i had incredibly high expectations for I owned all the other Tool albums and loved every single one of them. Unlike 10,000 days, Undertow and Aenima Lateralus didn't grab me instantly and i had to listen to it once or twice before i really got into it. Lateralus is a very progressive and complex album so you can expect plenty of time signiature changes and lengthy songs. My favourite songs off the album are the epic Lateralus itself, the combine Parabol-Parabola song(s) and then probably the Grudge but every song on the album is at least very good if not amazing.
I would definatley recommend this album to anyone who is capable of appreciating it.

Lateralus [VINYL]

I saw the 'Schism' video on Kerrang the other night and was absolutely mesmerised. I had the album within 24 hours. The whole thing has just blown me away. I cannot get it off my CD player.
A fan of the old school rock like Sabbath, Priest and Purple, I think this album harks back to this era but in a revived and utterly refreshing way. Even the artwork on the CD is like nothing I've seen outside of an encylopoedia before.
Listen to it loud, or better still, with a good pair of headphones. You will be lost in the haunting melodic passages and your heart rate will double when the tension builds into its many crescendos. The drums and bass kick ass in the same way Bonzo and Jones did. This is an easy 5 star album.
