Little Earthquakes

by: Tori Amos

Release Date January 06, 1992
After the failed experiment of her hair-metal/pop album, 1988's Y Kant Tori Read, Tori Amos returned to her Hollywood apartment and composed the material that made up her solo debut album. Eschewing the '80s fashions she had taken on in order to make it big (and failed), Amos returned to her roots - she had been playing piano since the age of two and was something of a "child prodigy."

Musically, these are complexly structured and excellently-executed songs detailing some intensely intimate personal feelings. Amos explores all the baggage of her Christian upbringing and tackles themes of identity, loss, and relationships - but also imbues the material with a sense of fun and humour, particularly on the jaunty "Happy Phantom" and ... American Doll Posse

by: Tori Amos

Release Date April 30, 2007
I have been a huge Tori fan since seeing her in a small club at the time of the first album. I bought all the albums and rarities and collected the bootlegs, so I am not a casual fan and I do know what I am talking about.
Tori has been going off the boil since "Boys for Pele". The next few albums always had a few saving graces, but "Scarlett's walk" had half a dozen decent tracks on an intolerably long cd and "The Beekeper" had maybe 2 or 3 decent tunes.
"American doll Posse" has no tunes at all and its 23 tracks long. It is boring, laughably self indulgent and there is not be a single track that would be fit to sit alongside her early B-Sides.
I know Tori obsessives will cry treason, but wake up to the facts people. She has blown ... Read More:

Live at Montreux 1991-1992

by: Tori Amos

Release Date September 22, 2008
This double CD provides us with the wonderful chance to go back in time and hear 2 quite different concerts by Amos. CD1, from 1991, captures Tori just before the release of her debut album LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (I am discounting her true first release, Y KANT TORI READ, as this flopped). Here, you hear that there is a vulnerability to Tori - she comments upon not being used to playing in front of so many people, and during the song "Happy Phantom", she forgets one word. Rather than doing what she would now do - just replace it for another, meaning no-one would be any the wiser - she stops, and admits to the crowd that she has forgotten her lyric.
CD2 is from 1992, just after the release of LITTLE EARTHQUAKES, the album which got her the appreciation ... Read More:

Tales of a Librarian: A Tori Amos Collection

by: Tori Amos

Release Date November 17, 2003
The reviewer slightly further down this page, called Mr. S.J. Wheeler must be mentally retarded, or perhaps he's one of those pathetic, insecure little boys who doesn't like women who are ten zillion trillion billion times more talented, intelligent and charismatic than themselves.

Because Tori Amos is a straight-up genius, no two ways about it. Her writing is some of the finest I have ever read, and that's supposed to be part and parcel of having a career in music: creating authentic, insightful lyrics. The fact that Tori Amos delves into human emotions and the dynamics of human behaviour, creating ultra-complex, multi-faceted artworks in the process just makes it all the more laughable that talentless cretins like Girls Aloud are permitted ... Under The Pink

by: Tori Amos

Release Date January 31, 1994
Under the pink is an album packed with great songs that is quite similar in sound to little earthquakes.
1.Pretty good year-This is an amazing piano ballad that changes into a rock tune halfway through and then turns back into a ballad again!Only Tori could pull that off!
2.God-This is a song questioning religion(Something Tori is well known for)in a funk style, combining a ska guitar and a funk bass with Tori's great vocals and piano skills.
3.Bells for her-This is a song that like the name points out is played on a piano that makes bell noises. This song is so hauntingly beautiful with an extremely sad story about sexual abuse-it creeped me out the first time I heard it!
4.Past the mission-My favourite song on the album is this song which ... Read More:

The Beekeeper

by: Tori Amos

Release Date February 21, 2005
Many would say from the choirgirl hotel to be her mid career masterpiece, but to me it is too accesible, and the beekeeper forces you to think, plus her voice sounds like you are eating pure honey on occasion, and I love working for my musical pleasures at times, and goodbye to pisces hits me between the eyes,'cos I am a pisces, so there is almost a free form jazz meets commercial pop on this one which reaches it's finest level I think in all her work, so hats off to choirgirl, and beekeeper as well, her two finest midcareer albums and must haves for true fans.

Boys for Pele

by: Tori Amos (Tribute)

Release Date January 20, 1997
After a dramatic entrance with the hugely accessible and impacting Little Earthquakes in 1992, followed by the more classical-influenced and enigmatic Under the Pink two years later, Tori Amos pushed her solo, acoustic performer persona to the limit on her third opus, the epic Boys for Pele, before going on to experiment with rhythms and effects on subsequent records.

Pele, recorded during 1995 in an Irish church in County Wicklow, with further work done at a Georgian house, is suitably baroque and takes Amos' penchant for twisting, unconventional melodies and vivid metaphor to new extremes for the most intense and bloodletting of her records. That's not to say that it's a loud and raucous listen, although it is full of some of her more freeform singing, but the passionate ... Read More:

From the Choirgirl Hotel

by: Tori Amos

Release Date May 04, 1998
In her first three albums, Tori Amos perfected a dramatic- if inherently limited- sound based around her soaring vocals and piano. There was always the question of whether her music could evolve and if she could ever get a really good band behind her. Also, on the back of the hit remix of 'Professional Widow' (and the unsuccessful remix of 'God' a few years earlier') it seemed entirely possible that Tori could become something of a dance diva! 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' proved that BOTH were possible as Tori reinvented and reinvigorated her music with one of her greatest albums.
The opener `Spark' is arguably the single most powerful and dynamic song Tori has ever produced. This song REALLY rocks and as it builds it is truly thrilling. The subject matter is however, heartbreaking. This is about ... Read More:
