The reason for that status/ categorisation can be heard on bleak, beguiling songs like 'Kathleen' and 'Waiting Around To Die' where Townes Van Zandt's mournful lyrics, sad, sonorous vocals and sparse musical accompaniment sound like a painful, plaintive cry from the heart. Legend: the Best Of Townes Van Zandt is a poignant reminder that country music is much more than line dancing, Dolly Parton and reactionary attitudes.

Townes Van Zandt has a lot of CDs available and not all of them are good. Be careful what you buy. Check out the reviews and track listings on Amazon first. In my opinion there are too many later CDs which are just repacked old songs with little or no new material. I love his music but I am not prepared to pay full album price for one or two songs. Therefore I was unsure where to start with his back catalogue then I found this boxset.

The box set is amazing value. You get Townes first 7 albums (and arguabley his best) plus a live CD for £14. All of these CDs contain Townes songwriting at its most prolific and his best. I've been a Townes Van Zandt fan for over 20 years now and I've lost more cassettes and cd's than I care to remember. So when I decided to begin to collect his music again I fortunately begun here. There's all the Townes that I've always admired (I nearly used the word love) on one cd. If you buy no other , then this one is a must as it's the songwriter/poet at his best, i.e Live. I was fortunate to see him perform once and will never forget it. This recording captures him at his best - Live and raw and the genius shines through.

I first heard this album about 15 years ago , when one of my friends picked it up cheap from a bargain bin somewhere. We'd both seen Townes on a TV showing of the film "Heartworn Highways" , and were both struck by this unknown folk/country/ unclassifiable singer .
I taped it at the time , and got really into it over the years - the songs are all excellent , and the arrangements and instrumentation are just right to suit Townes's always affecting vocals and great lyrics. When I managed to track it down on CD a few years ago ,it was still as good as I remembered.
High points ? Almost everything - but I'd have to say "Columbine" and "Colorado Girl" , and the brilliant "Lungs".
