Being a Toyah nut i have every track on this album elsewhere so i didnt bother playing it until today. I was staggered at just how brilliant 'Now i'm running' is. I'd never heard this version before and its excellent, so too is Angel, another new track. All in all it's a great compilation....from first to latest. I would strongly recommend it over and above the other 'Best of Toyah's' out there. This spans over twenty years, and becuase it does, every track is different. We all have different perceptions of what makes this woman so phenominal (and yes a little bit cheesy, but what the hell,)you will probably find your reasons right here.

I bought this album recently as I have always liked Toyah's song, 'It's a mystery' and I was lucky enough to see her perform a live set at a local nigtclub a few weeks ago, including 'It's a mystery', 'I want to be free' and 'Thunder in the mountains', all of which are on this album. After seeing her live and hearing this album I have discovered that Toyah is vastly under rated, and sings extremely well! My favourite track is definitely 'I want to be free', penned whilst still at school and is a classic new wave/punk anthem of the eighties along with 'It's a mystery'. This is a must have for any fan of eighties/ new wave music, you will be pleasantly surprised!

How would today's young audience find this? And the audience before that? Do you get what Toyah is about? Were you a fan? What do you think now? Enough of the questions. Give this a listen, in todays multi re-packaged, re-sampled music market. This was and is original, groundbreaking, insipring. She did her 'own thing' in her 'own way' and love it or hate it, you couldn't ignore it. As all the other reviews say ,this album was Toyah at her best, if you ignore the over commercial 'I wanna be free' and lesser so 'It's a mystery', which fans are fond of (mostly) as it gave Toyah success. Even so, listen to the poetry and melody of 'Jungles of Jupiter' and rhythms of 'Masai boy'. How about 'We are' -well what are we about today? Toyah was and is all about being your own ... Read More:

'Minx' is often criticized for not being a great album. Well, in truth it's not stunning. It's very overproduced and distinctly dated in the 80's, which Toyah even acknowledges in the liner notes. 'Minx' came after Toyah split with indie label Safari records, as well as with her long time songwriting partner Joel Bogen. His loss is apparent on this album, and most that would follow. He was a crucial element of the "Toyah" sound that became famous in the early 80's, though without him to write the music, Toyah was left to rely on a batch of hired hands through her new major record label, CBS/Portrait. The results are quite mixed.
The first single offering was "Don't fall in love (I said)", and was a great and upbeat pop song, though far removed from some of the darker imagery ... Read More:

I bought this album in 1981 after being introduced to Toyah's music via 'Four From Toyah' and 'Anthem'. It is such a good live album and beats anything that came after 1982's 'The Changeling'. The live versions of 'Danced' and 'Ieya' are so much better than the original studio versions from 1979 and 1980 respectively. 'Victim of The Riddle' is also an excellent into. This collection together with extras from 1981 and 1982 will probably surprise anyone who only knows Toyah for her pop hits and was a revelation to me in 1981. Great to listen to it all over again on cd.

After tasting the success Toyah had in 1981, many artists would have exploited it by intentionally leaning towards a more commercial market. They would have sacrificed quality song writing for the sake of ensuring the cash flow continues. Toyah's 1982 follow up to the platinum selling album 'Anthem' was anything but a commercial compromise. 'The Changeling' is a very dark album, continuing with occult-ish themes Toyah has drawn from since the beginning. Though a couple of songs sounded as if they could have been singles, only one was taken from the album, which itself is another defiant move.
The album opens with the oddball "Creepy room". It sounds more like a strange doodle, though is an appropriate start to the album.
"Street Creature" is the only real pop sounding song on the ... Read More:

After Toyah's 1981 album, 'Anthem', made her a household name in the UK, she returned with a bold and exciting album 'The Changeling'. Though it charted in the UK Top 10, and the one single released from the album achieved a modest chart placing, the tide was turning for Toyah's brief taste of commercial fame. 1983 saw the release of the final album with long time collaborator Joel Bogen, resulting in the excellent album 'Love Is The Law'. Sadly, the public interest was dwindling, and the album soon faded into obscurity, though remained a fan favorite over the years. The reason for the relative commercial failure certainly had nothing to do with quality of song writing. If anything, 'Love Is The Law' was more pop than 'The Changeling', and maybe even 'Anthem'.
There were two singles released from 'Love Is The ... Read More:

I was a huge Toyah fan and was at the Odeon on both nights that this album was recorded. They were both fantastic gigs, a great atmosphere, and Toyah and the band always put on a really good show. I think that's why I have always loved this album. I bought this CD so I could listen to the album in my car and I haven't been disappointed. I do still have the LPs at home, so if I get too upset by the editing (and I do miss Simon Phillips' drum solo, a bit) I could go home and listen to the full version but I don't feel the editing has taken away the fun of the show entirely.

Being an avid Toyah fan for 25 years, since I heard It's A Mystery back in 1981 I was desperate to seek out this album. When I heard it I wished I hadn't.
The new songs are almost painful to listen to, with their rather average and cheesy rock tones being somewhat painful to endure. The rehashing of Sheep Farming In Barnet tracks only serve to ruin them. These songs needed no update and stand the test of time in their original form. All this album serves to do is muddy the production and smooth off all the excitingly rough edges. Did we really need a bunch of cabaret musicians to 'clean up' the spark of the original?
Toyah fans probably have to get it for completeness sake, and to be fair it isn't going to break the bank. It's important that you realise though, that you're not really getting anything particularly worthwile ... Read More:
