This album is amazing whether you are a Tricky fan or not. After seeing him perform two tracks from this album on Later with Jools i couldn't wait for it's release! I wasn't disappointed. If this album was only half as good i still wouldn't have been. It's got everything. Council Estate has an energy i haven't heard or felt since Punk and Two Tone were born. Puppy Toy is a really strong song - it's funny too! Veronika is Powerful because of it's starkness and the lyrics, and it grows on you. C'mon Baby is one of my favourites becouse it's so catchy without being naff and has great lyrics! Buy This Album if you're a fan, try it if you're not!

Yeah, this is good. I don't think there's a weak track on this album. As always, Tricky sounds almost asleep when he's actually part of the track - often you get other folk singing... with a bit of Tricky whispering in the background... or growling... or sounding like he's challenging the world record for speaking while holding gravel in his mouth. Smart stuff.
Is it deep? I dunno... I like it is all I'm saying... there might be a 'message' or two in the tracks - hell, it might be full of 'messages', but I just really like 'em. It chills me out to listen to this, all the songs sound pretty unrushed, like there's all the time in the world - except maybe for Black Steel and Brand New You're Retro of course.

Bought this when it first came out... having had Maxinquaye a while and loving it. Was kinda disappointed to be honest... wasn't grabbed straight away. Now it's 2007 and I have five albums by Tricky - this is probably my second favourite. That's not to say the others are bad, it's just that this album has really grown on me over time.
You just know that there's a lot of depression and drugs involved in what Tricky gets up to... you can imagine him in some dive somewhere in Bristol, lying on a stained couch, with smoke all around him... scribbling quick witty lines onto a crumpled piece of paper - well, I can anyway... hell, he might have an Apple Mac to write his lyrics and music on, but somehow I doubt it.

Maxinquaye is an album that I have really enjoyed since I picked it up way back in 1996 or 1997 because I couldn't get the Dummy album by Portishead at the time... I was young and I just wanted to spend some money... I loved Maxinquaye. This album, on the other hand, does have some stonking tracks on it, but it never grabbed me and shook me around like Maxinquaye did... or even Pre-millennium Tension. On this album, there are three real stand-out tracks for me - Money Greedy, Singing The Blues and Talk To Me - as per normal you get some of Tricky and some of other folk... with Tricky whispering, growling or speaking and sounding like he's rolling gravel around in his mouth... all partially swallowed up with constant stonking ear-bleeding beats... true to form I'd say.

Tricky was always the poor relation to Massive Attack in my opinion, but with this album, Tricky has moved his sound on and kept it relevent, whereas MA's last two albums have lost themselves in a fug of dark beats and soulless navel-gazing - a great shame.
Tricky's latest has a greater "live instruments" sound to it. There is still plenty of experimental electronica, including, of all things, a sample from a classic Bollywood funk tune ("dum maaro dum") on the final track! But the sound is typically dark and multi-layered. Tricky's brooding, deep voice adds another dimension to the mainly female vocal-led tracks.
This may not be the best album you hear all year, but it's well worth a listen. I would award it 3.5 stars if I could, but I give it the benefit ... Read More:

Stop beating about the BUSH - play 'Bury the evidence' as loud as poss in your headphones - your ears will bleed and your spine tingle - I guarantee (the tingle not necessarily the 'bleed'). This track sums up all that Tricky is about. AND.. the album is great, as are all of the risks and challenges that Tricky takes up. THIS GUY IS DIFFERENT AND BRAVE - If you are.... then buy every tribal beat on every album put through Tricky's Bristolian, asthma scarred voicebox now (pretentious moi?)
Release Date April 01, 1996
Nearly God has 4 good tracks on, the other 6 are ok. This is a very Dark albam, so those of you who love A W D F will love this, those who love Maxinquaye, like i do, should go for Blowback or his new albam Vulnerble. I give a 5 star rating to all 3 of these great Tricky albams. I wont forget Pre M . T which would get a cool 4 stars.

The prospect of DJ Muggs and Tricky on the same record is mouth-watering. For Real, Contradictive and Hot Like A Sauna really deliver, they are fantastic, spooky songs for different reasons. Bom Bom Diggy and the hilarious I Like The Girls are also good. But the promise behind tracks like Call me, Wash My Soul are never delivered, and they are just by-numbers. The metal re-mix of Hot Like A Sauna is a case in point - it could've been a Prodigy-style classic, instead it's just the same song with a weak metallic riff over the opening bars.
