Since Greg Dulli started sniffing sausages instead of coke and cut out the drink only to find his next vice - Chocolate gateau sandwiches! (Or so it would seem) Mr dulli, as i should call him, has gone from being the white Marvin Gaye to the white-Barry-White in appearance. He looks like the heavyweight boxer who retired just in time. He also resembles a more Belushi-esque member of the Baldwin family, but i tell you what... It just adds to it all. Powder Burns

Greg Dulli is one of those infuriating people whose talent is matched only by their inconsistency - I've been called out for saying so, but to me, "Black Love" is the only truly great Afghan Whigs album, although all the others admittedly have their moments. The Twilight Singers, I'm happy to report, are a great deal more together, improving in a steady arc from "Blackberry Belle" through "She Loves You" through to this gorgeous, rock-noir monster.
Noir is exactly the right word for "Powder Burns"; it's a musical equivalent to its cover art - the hazy blurred neon of a midnight cityscape while you're drunk as hell in the back of some (possibly very dodgy) associate's car. at last , dulli releases an album he should have released with the whigs . Well this is an album of covers , and I'd waited years for the Afghan Whigs to do an album of the absolute incredible covers they'd done either live or as b-sides , it never happened and I've spent much time gathering those together. Well this album is as close as the Twilight Singers have got to the Whigs , which I think is good thing , but maybe others out there think different . In particular , Too tough to die , Black is the colour and my personal favourate , Billie Holliday's Strange Fruit make you realise Dulli still has some Whigs in him , and after seeing them live in London a few weeks ago ,where they played everything a lot more up tempo , I'm content to love the Twilight Singers for ... This album by Greg Dulli's new band really shows a new direction in his musical career. It is a beautifully crafted collection of songs which uses Dulli's charismatic voice to the best of its ability. But it could not be said that this is an album by Greg Dulli and the guys at the back, with the rest of the band aquitting themselves well.
The music could be called soul-grunge in style, with the emphasis on the soul. The lyrics are dark, and although poignant it is the music that really craves attention. The album is the sort you would put on in the background if you had a group of friends over to catch up on old times- nothing obtrusive but not banal.
Overall an excellent album.

A Stitch in Time

` a stitch in time' is a companion to Twilight Singers' 2006 album `Powder Burns', three of the tracks (`sublime', `they ride' & `the lure would prove too much') feel like leftovers from those sessions - which the presence of Joseph Arthur, former Afghan Whig colleague Rick McCollum (in a co-writing capacity) et al suggests. Parts of the production like `Powder Burns' seem a little slick and were much better live when the Twilight Singers toured (...a live album could be a great thing, especially the points where Dulli was on his tod on the piano or when Mark Lanegan appeared!).

Lanegan has a history with Dulli - both were in great bands that were kind of tainted by the whole Grunge Phenomenon and the pair were rumoured to have been housemates during the ... Read More:

This is an brilliant, warm and heart aging EP, it sounds allmost like outtakes from 1965 by The Afghan Whigs, and that quite nice.... Greg Dulli rocks
