What the Toll Tells

If you like early blues, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash, the novels of Cormac McCarthy and the films of Sam Peckinpah, you'll love the Two Gallants, particularly this album. In fact, the first track on this album could be the soundtrack to the film of Blood Meridian that Sam Peckinpah will one day come back from the grave to direct. They're a great band. I saw them live at the Scala in London, though not 'very exclusively' sadly. The first album is also very good but has more of an early Tom Waits melancholic feel to it (including the great line "If liquor's a lover, then you know I'm a whore"). These guys are the real deal.

Two Gallants

This is truly one of the greatest debuts i've heard in a long while. Not just becuse the music is excellent, and the lyrics are increadble and vividly visual, but these two have conviction and passion that is so rare these days. You really belive that the tales they tell have real truth and honesty, but you really get the impression that these guys live for this. The music ebbs and flows, moves from stipped down ballads, to firey punk rock agression, but throughout the passion screams through. The songs tell tales and the music takes you away, and this album im sure, could move anyone, in one way or another.
