Guns in the Ghetto

Amongst the hardcore UB fans this probably ranks as one of their greatest albums (and the most underated), yet the album recieved little public attention and the two singles released from the album did only modestly in the charts. Don't let this put you off buying the album, it has a refreshing uplifting feel about it and some cultural lyrics in 'Guns in the ghetto' probably one of the best songs they have written. 'Always there' is another UB classic as well as 'I love it when you smile' and 'Lisa'. My fave UB album, one I never get tired of hearing. The dancehall album which followed its release features Jamaicas finest riding the riddims off this album and complements this album well.

A tatty, strangled old moggy of an album.
It will become apparent that I am not a fan of UB40. I hastened to dismiss them after the atrocious `King' and the even worse `One in Ten', but in terms of abject dreadfulness, this is on another level entirely.
Oh so working class! Oh so socialist! Oh what a load of old cobblers. And oh, what a scandalous assortment of shabby, flabby, crabby reggae covers presented to the world with no energy, no warmth and no strength of emotion.
Sometimes when you're reviewing music from the past, the time elapsed tempers your initial hostility, but my anger towards 'LoL' ( ha ha, that's cheered me up....a bit.) has probably increased as the years have gone by. My resolve to detest this abomination ... Read More:

Homegrown

Homegrown certainly is an apt title. And this proves to be a big album from an important band.
This latest collection throws classic ub40 rhythms from all angles. So destructive is simply dub at its best, rich with an ethnic vibe only a British band from the inner city can produce. Sure they have been around over 20 years, but one never loses sight of where one is from. Nothing with out you shows the band continue to push forward musically and is rough enuff to pacify dancehall cravings. Someone like me and I knew you are vintage 40 with deep bass drum lines, and the tightest horn section this side of balsall heath. Earl's vocal on Freestyler provides a perfect opportunity to display the concious lyrics for which the band are famed. Ali Campbell ... Read More:

Labour of Love Vol.3 [MINIDISC]

UB40 have done it again in their series of cover albums. This one i have to say personally is the finest of the three. All of these tracks tracks featured are all songs that should of been massive hits in their day anyway, but at least the ub;s still maintain by recording these tracks which thankflly give them a new lease of life.. From the quirky Melodians b side "Its my delight" to the smooth Ken ooothe classic of "crying over you" You will sing these trcks in your head all day. John Holts "My best girl" gets top draw crooning from Mr Campbell. while track 15 anthem Leagalise it must get a live blasting every time they play.. all i can say is go out and buy it ,and i promise you youll end up singing along. cant wait for ... Labour of Love Vol.1 & 2

I bought this album in 1994 and I have to say it was the best album I ever bought, It has all the best UB40 songs on it(except 1 in 10 which is a little disappointing) like Please don't make me cry, Sweet sensation, Jonny too bad, Version girl, Many rivers to cross, Way you do the things you do and my personal favorite Kingston town plus of course Red, red wine and loads more wicked tracks. It is definately an album I can listen to again and again and if I get the chance to get it on CD I will because I've listened to the tape that much I've just about worn the tape out. The best thing about UB40 is you don't have to be a big fan of the old style reggie to enjoy this album. It really does deserve 10 out of 10 and five stars.
