This album is a warning to all new bands: don't believe your own hype. Ultrasound were hailed as the next big thing, and the singles running up to the album's release seemed to justify that (although the cracking 'Best Wishes' and 'I'll Show You Mine' are both conspicuously absent).

The best songs are, funnily enough, the singles that were permitted; 'Floodlit World' and 'Stay Young', which both soar and swoon wonderfully (when they eventually start), and show what could've been if the band had learned to say no. But the rest of the album is a testament to a group believing they can do anything. Best Wishes

Following 1997's acclaimed Floodlit World/Same Band single (on Fierce Panda) came this 3 track release from 1998. As with follow-up I'll Show You Mine, this was not included on the epic debut Everything Picture (1999)- though there was an alternate hidden version of 'Best Wishes' on the Ltd version of that album.

Ultrasound were a mutant blend of Pere Ubu & Smashing Pumpkins & fitted in with a vague-prog-ish movement (see releases by Radiohead, Spiritualized, Verve, Dark Star, Doves, Strangelove, Mogwai, January). The main track is less anthemic than Floodlit World- quite an odd choice for the lead- but nicely mixed by Nigel 'Radiohead' Godrich. From it's neo-prog synthy beginnings to to epic choruses, this is every bit a classic single, Fierce Panda sure know how to pick 'em. Full of brilliance and energy and sheer SPARKLE, it was a sad day when this band split up, and a great loss to British music. But instead of mourning their passing, celebrate their life by BUYING THIS RECORD!! You won't regret it...
