I must confess that Underworld had slipped off my musical radar for a bit after the slight disappointment of Hundreds Days off, and had resigned myself to listening to the excellent live album 'Everything, Everything' as their last great release, but this album is one of the most significant and finest returns to form by any band.
Other reviewers have described the tracks in depth and made the relevant comparisons (and why not the tunes deserve it) so i won't repeat other peoples words, instead i will simply sum up this album by saying that it is one of the best albums i have bought in the past ten years, possibly Underworlds finest work, and at no point did I want to skip through any part of it. Last time that happened was with ... Read More:

This is almost scarily smooth music, in spite of being electronica. And offhand I cannot think of much approaching it in quality. Well, Future Sound Of London. And Massive Attack. And Tricky. Erm, Portishead. Lamb.
"Winjer" has a phenomenal drive and would, were I ever asked to name the one favourite track of all my CDs, probably be thought of first. "Cups" just sucks you in. "Push". It's all quite on a level of its own making, so specifically underworldish.
The day I discovered Underworld was my lucky day: There's more to life than Mahler, Nielsen and Wagner.
Funny things is, I came to Underworld from FSOL. Bought a couple CDs, thought "ouch!" and hid them away. All that money just wasted. Suddenly, a few months later, they crept ... Read More:

There is something about playing live that makes great artists rise above their ordinary level. Radiohead's live recordings are infintely better than their album versions (just compare spinning plates on I Might be wrong (live recordings) with the one on Amnesiac) And Underworld are no different: the energy captured here makes this a truly remarkable record, along with, of course, the exceptionally high standard of the music. There is not a single dud track here, just a relentless build to the euphoric climax 'Rez/Cowgirl', through some of their best work. The version of Born Slippy here will confirm to all those who under-value it due to its commercial success that this is a truly magnificent song. And Pearl's Girl will send shivers down your spine. i had to choose my favourite dance album i would plump for......errr Flukes " The Techno Rose Of Blighty " but... but it,s a jolly close call between that album and "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" by Underworld . As well as being that very rare thing- a dance album that works as a complete entity this album was also hugely influential , both in terms of music( most importantly ) and design ( it,s listed in the book "The Greatest Album Covers Of All Time)
Underworld were originally a duo formed by Rick Hyde and Karl Smith and were purveyors of anodyne white funk .The introduction of DJ whiz kid Darren Emerson saw the band make a timely change in direction . The groups dance music integrated disparate genres- dub, funk, house, techno, pop- but was also significant for the ... Read More:

Why review this album if it is not the kind of music you usually listen to? Ok, if you like Underworld and this comes as a real disappointment, then fair enough. But to have this album as a random review, and slate it, is a waste of time.
I refer to the one-star review below - check the rest of the reviews from the same person: a few negative reviews, however I can appreciate them. For example, the review for a Miles Davis album relates to the incorporation of rap, which the reviewer has a clear dislike of. Fair enough. But why slate an album simply because it is not to your taste???
I have bought some howlers in the past - my mistake - but I didn't go out of my way to rubbish them...
Anyway, A damn fine record sirs, Pearls girl is a beast of a track; it leads you in gently ... Read More:

Sure, there's a few omissions, but you can't please everyone now can you?!!!
I think I first saw Underworld in 1994, but it's been a while! fantastic fusion of sound and image that transcended the dance scene of the time, they seem to fall out of favour after 100 days off, but I hope that I'm right in thinking that there maybe a 2nd coming for them with the new release "Oblivioin with Bells" on oct07, check out their website for video's and tasters from the album.
Anyway, any compilation with Rez, etc... on there needs to be bought, just wish the Lemon Interrupt version of Dirty Epic was on there with the Akira sample, then I would be very happy indeed!!!

i own a few of these collections and in relation to this type of album, it is one of the best. the first i heard was groove armada's an was amazed, purely because this was my first experience to this sort of album. somehow, no matter how many of these albums get released, the more similar they all feel. this is by no means a bad thing, yet i find myself listening to the album a good 20 times, adore a few tracks, but then i am bored with it. this is the reason the album gets a 4. so far as the content is concerned, the middle section of the album is incredible. to mix reggae, into an indie group, to dance through to hip hop, (this by the way is the moment of the album, when the bass of aphex twin - didgeridoo is mixed into dead prez - hiphop) you have to be a genius in musical knowledge and production. ...
