this is my top van halen choice for those new to this great heavy metal band who are great both with david lee roth and sammy hagar. this is a 2-disc set of all their classic tracks from the 1980s.
poundcake, right now, and the cradle will rock, unchained, top of the world, jump, aint talkin bout love, and several others would be my favorite songs on this 2disc set. this would present rock fans with good taste so get this set today.
Best tracks: "Jump", "Panama", "Hot for Teacher", "Drop Dead Legs"
Van Halen's biggest album turned out to be their last with lead singer David Lee Roth; there's a very fair argument in saying their music never recovered following his departure. Roth exuded a flamboyant showmanship that was as electric as Eddie Van Halen's spectacular fretwork, and as soon as the dull Sammy Hagar took over the reins, the sound was never the same. 1984 is a blockbuster album through and through, dominated by its huge singles and bulked out effectively by rock solid filler.
The enormous "Jump" turned out to be the band's most successful single, which is a little ironic considering its swathed in synthesisers, a rather ... Read More:

Van Halen 2 is definitely the best Roth era album by far. Eddie utilizes his "Brown" sound to full extent with great songs like Somebody Get Me A Doctor which really makes you want to sing along. Spanish Fly shows Eddie's usual talent on the acoustic guitar and party songs like Beautiful Girls and DOA really makes this album worth getting.

well this is when they stop messing about and became serious isnt it?
as good as they were to watch with dave, in my opinion they only had 2 great records in there self titled first record and the 1984 album.and it seemed all dave wanted to was party and not take the music seriosly enough.so out goes dave and in comes sammy a well versed muso and bang one great album after another starting with 5150 and you cant argue with it because the music speaks for itself and if you dont beleive me just have listen.

After listening to this album for the first time in 2008, I simply don't understand how anyone can score this more than 2 stars.
To begin with, there are too many cover songs. Then to top that there are a few really naff "non metal/rock" tracks which turn the genre brand of VH on it's head. Some rock bands (UFO come to mind) can mix the heavy with the light and easy to great effect, but not VH. This is absolute rubbish and if your looking to get into VH back catalogue give this one a miss.

I was somewhat sceptical upon hearing that MOR stalwart Sammy Hagar was replacing Diamond Dave in Van Halen as I thought that they'd change direction. That isn't the case on this belter of an album, some really good tunes like Cabo Wabo,Sucker in a 3 Piece, Feels so Good & others i cannot remember the title of.All in all a pretty good transition from 1984 via 5150!

were you there? did you see? did you know van halen only toured the uk 3 times? (1978 supporting sabbath, 79 supporting vh2 release and 1980 supporting this release)
they were and are (saw them again nov 07 nyc) the greatest show on earth. blessed with both the best guitarist since hendrix and the best frontman since james brown it was always goona work. it was the degree to which it did and left everyoned breathless that surprised folks. some just cant even handle it. i pity them (deep down i chuckle actually).
often overlooked coming after 2 perfect releases, this album is still better than most bands best work. the enthusisam, discipline and talent is still there , and while the excesses are kicking in, they havent taken over yet. we have Eddie's ... Read More:

BALANCE is a record I have a hard time adjusting too. I find that it has some of Van Halen's best material of their career, and it could have been the best Hagar-lead album, even better than 5150. As it is, BALANCE is a record cluttered with songs that should have been left off and completely kill the momentum of the album.
By 1995, grunge had taken over the world. Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder forever changed the rock and roll landscape, and most hair bands simply did not survive. Eddie Van Halen must have known how widely different the music milieu was, and tried adjusting Van Halen's sound to fit more closely in the times. So Van Halen recorded Balance, an oddly uneven record.
In 1991, when Hagar and co. did their last album, the music terrain hadn't changed. FOR ... Read More:

My title says it all really. I'm a fan of Zep, AC/DC, Gary Moore, Guns'n'Roses, The Cult etc and this album is one of the best live albums I possess in my 600+ cd collection. Brilliant songs, awesome guitar, great production....what more could you possibly want? Plus, look at the cost! This album has dropped to bargain basement prices.
