Sung with a deep and melodramatic voice, these tracks have an unmistakable feel of cabaret about them - but in a cool, Edith Piaf/Jacques Brel sort of way. Doleful accordions weep in the background as Dani Klein's alto tells tales of bad men and desperate love, and you can imagine nighthawks slouching over their absinthe in, as one track specifies, "a sleazy part of town". Very Edward Hopper.

They pull it off, though. All this seedy, sexy, tango-ish over-the-top melancholia actually works. Just about every song on this CD is instantly recognisable. Second album from this Belgian combo who are into stylish eclecticism. A compilation of 12 acoustically arranged songs, the album sports a potpourri of musical styles with no filler tracks. There's Stax soul in What's A Woman, a touch of jazz in Travelling light, and a smattering of Piaf in the French chanson Quand Elle Rit ... As interpreters, the band successfully employ influences as varied as South American rhythms, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and even the Stray Cats. Lead singer Dani Klein's distinctive voice is the main attraction.
