Soft spot for this compilation, it being my first ever thrash album (back in 86, I bought it on cassette - can still see the cover with Cronos!)
It's pretty crude by todays standards - little in common with the Black Metal acts that followed; no keyboards, the satanic lyrics are often slightly tongue in cheek, and there isn't the icy cold feeling of the likes of Emperor or Dimmu Borgir! Not to mention technical ability!
What you do have is a set of songs that are catchy with conventional structures that are more Punk Metal than anything else. The youth of today, raised on Satyricon & Immortal will find this fairly tame & a little shoddy, but back in it's day, it was fast & nasty! And it persuaded me to buy Master Of Puppets.... ... What can you about Venom that hasn't been said before, yeh they invented thrash, yeh it was fashionable to slag them off i.e they consistently topped Kerrang's worst band poll in their early years, the consisitent line up changes haven't helped either. When the original line up reformed in 97 I was delighted, when Resurrection came out I was a bit skeptic to say the least a Venom album without Abbadon!! My god what an album that was. Anyway following the slightly disapointing Metal Black, yeh it was good but it really could've been better, Hell sees Venom release a worthy album under the Venom monicker. Cronos's bass never sounded so evil & Rage is an exceptional guitarist who is the missing link that should have been in place on Metal Black, Screaming ... Read More:

This is a really cool buy because of all the non-album tracks, which are excrutiangly fast, loud and hard.Nice remastering job,now taken from the original master tapes rather than from the vinyl singles, like they used to come as bonus on early cd japanese editions.Only complaint is that they still don't compensate for the awful dinamic compression this records suffered when recorded, something I can correct with my dinamic expander. The ¨rough ¨production LEAPS to life then. The live tracks are inaudible and confuse, but who cares when you get like over an hour of hard-hitting non-album VENOM songs !!!!!!

It should come as no surprise to anyone that even after twenty years Venom still refuse to go away, and this timely release shows why.
From the bludgeoning, scratchy roar of early works Welcome To Hell and Countess Bathory to the post-Cronos Prime Evil and the slashing cover of Judas Priest's Hell Bent For Metal, Venom show how they changed popular music forever. Countless bands, most notably Metallica and Slayer, drew heavily on Venom's insidious influence, but never themselves quite managed to capture the originals' malicious majesty.
Standout cuts on the album must be the opening and closing tracks, both taken from Venom's second and finest album, Black Metal.
An album that can't be recommended highly enough to any metal fan, ... Read More:
