Phonetically Speaking - and Don't Forget the Piano

by: Victor Borge

Release Date October 22, 2001
Victor Borge was a unique performer, combining the skills of a concert pianist with the timing and insights of a great comedian. Always impeccable, the complete gentleman, Borge's was a sophisticated, intelligent humour, humane and humanistic, though not without teeth - acerbic, witty, fast, but delivered with a voice which is as warm and silky as a glass of Drambuie. A Dane, he escaped ahead of the Nazi invasion and settled in the USA, rapidly becoming an adopted son ... and quickly establishing a role as an international treasure. He made regular appearances on British television in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's, and his comic routines were regularly played on the radio. Comedy in Music

by: Victor Borge

Release Date May 06, 1996
Victor Borge's Comedy in Music is irresistable wit meeting immovable objects. Pretentious music, fussy grammar, and high brow audience members are quickly laid low by Mr. Borge's deft comic touch. From the opening line "Welcome to Boston" through a series of spoken and musical interactions with audience members, Mr. Borge plays the role of a beloved, if slightly antic, teacher admonishing his students to behave while rupturing their composure with each new routine.

Mr. Borge's diverse talents combine to give us somthing genuinely new: high comedy and low art. Consider his re-working of "Happy Birthday" in the style of past masters. He is so funny in setting up the routine, that the musical interpretation is secondary. ... Read More:

Comedy in Music

by: Victor Borge

Release Date April 28, 2003
This seems to have been re-recorded from 78rpm records made early in Borge's career (a couple of times you are advised to "turn the record over"!). The classic "spoken punctuation" and "inflationary language" tracks are redeeming features of this disk, the only other is that it's cheap. He was a fantastic entertainer but judging from this disk you'd not think so. Also only 6(?) of the 15 tracks are humour, the rest are concert pieces played in the style of the 1950's and suffering from the relatively poor technology of the time.
Yes he was a good pianist but the disk fails to do him justice in that sphere either.
The sleeve notes say his humour is timeless - the disk then seems to conclusively prove the opposite. Over 50(?) years of performing ... Read More:
