Palmystery

Wootens new album "Palmystery" is, as all his albums before this have been, a massive, solid display of magnificent and suprior bass playing. He manages to amaze yet again, this time around with a more subtle, jazzy sound and feel, rather than the very funky slapping he is so famous for.

Obviously he still slaps a lot, but it doesn't dominate the sound. There's more playing with the feel, with the soul (if that says anything at all) of the songs on "Palmystery". Furthermore there are some really inspired performances from guesting musicians as well throughout the album. Great solo pieces throughout. My own personal favorite probably being the funky "Left, Right, and Center".

What Did He Say

Victor wooten is the most amazing bass player i have ever heard. He has managed to turn the bass guitar into a truly melodic instrument. The album does not come anymore diverse than this, and manages to entertain and impress throughout.

A must buy for any fan of proper talent!

A Show of Hands

My familiarity with Wooten comes via his work with Bela Fleck and Steve Smith. He is an amzing bass playing, no two ways about that!
I'd read the reviews of this an decided to give it a go. As a result I have mixed feelings.
It is fundamentally a series of solo bass pieces and the man plays some astonishing stuff, real show pieces.
However, the "scat" type and random vocals really grate; by and large they appear quite unnecessary. Because of this I dropped a star or two.
Wooten's skill and prowess are extraordinary and this is, in some respects, a specialist CD being just a a bass "showcase".
I just try to edit out the vocal intros - it greatly improves the experience.

Yin Yang" from living bass legend, the incomparable and inimitable Victor Wooten offers more of that wholesome bass goodness, that we all love and listen in amazement at, combined with a couple of swing-and-miss-like-a-blindfolded-drunkard tracks.

Some of the tracks on this double album, 'Hip Bop', 'Hormones in the Headphones', 'Imagine This", to name a few, are as good as anything Wooten has ever produced, being creative, tight, and well composed. Others, namely all the tracks featuring his daughter Kaila, are a bit too creative and not really that nice to listen to. This is cute, and those tracks are fun to listen to. Once. They should be on the album of course, but they are easily skipped once you've heard them once.

Victor Wooten, is THE greatest bassist ever, and THE only person to have surpassed the late great Jaco Pastorius.
I don't usually write these reviews, but i feel that as a huge fan of Vic, I needed to set Mr Ross right on a few of his facts. The chaff your talking about, and are needlessly critical of, gives this cd the party vibe of a Vic or a Flecktones concert. You then go to call Vic Teacher, when it is in fact his older brother, and guitarist Reggie Wooten who they call Teacha. Finaly worst of all you call Vic self indulgent, ask any one whos been taught by, or talked to Vic, and they will back me up on saying that he is the most down to earth person in the music industry, which is remarkable, seeing how much virtuosity he has.

Sit Up and Pay Attention, from the first few moments, when the whirlwind which is Dennis Chambers plays solo drums. Wow. All through the album these guys show their virtuosity, playing jazz music which reminds you at times of everyone you've ever heard. At times I thought I was listening to Stanley Clarke on bass, Keith Emerson on piano, Weather Report, UK, Asia, the list goes on.
I haven't bought a CD for many years, but had to buy this one after hearing it. This is not easy listening, but worth the effort.

Soul Circus

I have the up most respect for Victor, both as a bass player and a writer. Soul Circus showcases Wooten's blatantly technical and inventive genius to the highest order. Victor celebrates the "world of bass" with several of his musical peers/ well respected bass stars, including Bootsy Collins, Will Lee, Christian Mcbride and TM Stevens. The track "Tribute To The Bass" features these artists playing and vocalising, thus resulting in an entertaining festival of bass indulgence.
Soul Circus is essentially a vocal album, there are several (quality) guest singers featured including Saundra Williams and MC Divinity. Victor's own vocal performance is good.
