This album is almost as good as 'The bypass syndrome', with Vin's choice of material and self-penned songs being as astute as ever. Way before the meteoric rise of property prices, Vin sang 'Where the hell are we going to live' - an upbeat song concerning the problem with home-ownership that many people on low paid jobs face today. 'When the tide turns' is a gentle ballad with a soothing saxophone. The lyrics reflect that the 'brains of today' concern themselves with reducing human population as opposed to really sorting out the world's problems. Vin puts it far more eloquently than I did! Nica Nicaragua has a Spanish/Mexican feel to it. As well as the ubiquitous tin whistle tracks, there is a verbal discourse that Vin sings completely ... Read More:

I was given this album as a gift after seeing Vin perform live on 14 June in Northumbria and to listen to it brings back such strong memories of this unassuming man with the spellbinding voice and a gift for storytelling.
This album is a collection of both Vin's own material and those of other folk singers and the result is a mixture of the sublime and the stirring. "Forty Thieves" will get right inside you and you'll find you can't stop yourself singing along and the dancing melodies of the whistle on Wilfy Manion can't fail to set toes tapping. Contrast this with the haunting notes of "City of Angels" & "Troubles of Erin" - both of which I can't listen too without tears in my eyes and you have an album worth ... Read More:

Since I first heard the voice of Vin Garbutt in the late 70's, I have felt that he was the greatest troubadour in British folk. I still do. On the radio I heard the terrific song 'A Man of the Earth' written by Bernie Parry. The song is included on this live recording. It catches the initimate atmosphere in Red Lion Club, Birmingham, 1995, in an excellent technical quality. The opening song 'Wings' knocked me out: 'What's the use of voices if You don't have freedom? And what's the use of wings if You can't fly?' He will touch You emotionally one minute and make You laugh the next. He's a fine guitar player and in between Garbutt sings a capella and plays tin 'Clarkes' whistle. He covers nearly every thinkable topic and even if You don't share his ... Read More:

This is Vin's most accessible album. Recorded with a back up band of estimable musicians, some of the tracks have a folk-rock feel while others are acoustic ballads. Then there is Vin's virtuoso tin-whistle playing and a great electic guitar solo playing Bach's 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' giving the album a surprise twist at the end. But to appreciate Mr Garbutt, you have to listen to the lyrics. On this album they vary from discussing the fact that we have built our lives around the car rather than vice versa and the consequential effect on our 'green and pleasant land', to the ethics of cloning embryos for organs, to coal-mining (viewed in two different ways in consecutive songs), to the tale of an Irish girl travelling to Britain for an abortion, to the Kurdistan ... The format of this album is an alternation of vocal tracks and ensemble folk jams, with Vin as ever playing the tin whistle. These tracks have an Irish feel with piano and violin on some tracks. I tend to listen to this album by programming the CD player to play all the vocal tracks first and all the instrumentals second. In this format I give it four and a half stars! So what of the vocal tracks? 'England my England' is one of Vin's best songs; a look at unemployment delivered with pathos. 'Flower of Dumblane' is a great folk song with tasteful string accompaniment. The most lively track is 'Filipino Maid', with Hammond organ and drums giving an upbeat feel to the fun melodic line. On another song Vin expounds on the tragedy of being unable to ... Read More:
