I remember seeing the rather bizarre video for "Tribal Convictions" on one of those Rock Video shows that used to be on ITV at ridiculous times in the morning - you know the ones: Hosted by somebody like the buxomly clad Jakki Lynn (sp.?) that were always something to watch whilst chomping on your kebab after coming in from the pub. Anyway - I digress.
I thought "What a tune!" and rushed out to buy the album as soon as it hit the shelves. At the time I wasn't really into the thrashier side of the metal scene but this stood out amongst its counterparts due to its amazing musicality and incredible lyrics. Killing Technology

The transitional album for Voivod: with `Killing Technology' the band moved away from the noisy, chaotic thrash of their first two albums and began to expand their sound, tip-toeing into more prog territory and truly flexing their impressive musical muscles. `Killing Tech.' also heralded the start of Voivod's most impressive and successful period - this and the subsequent three albums are undoubtedly their finest.
The band still possess the raw and aggressive thrash tendencies of their early releases and vocalist Snake continues to scream his lyrics a little too often, but there's plenty of ambition in the lengthier arrangements and more complex time changes. Nothingface

This is one of the best albums ever recorded. It has a great guitar sound - very psychedelic, dissonant and experimental. The songs are very strong and Snake's voice sounds awesome. I can't believe it hasn't been re-released - and as it's such an awesome record I'm not surprised people are asking so much for it second hand.

Clever band, Voivod: Political lyrics heavily disguised via intelligent science fiction concepts - definiteley a band with something to say but never preachy!
Hailing from Canada, this inventive & ingenious band have heavily influenced artists as diverse as Opeth & Emperor.
Their music is very technical & complex too; A bastard marriage of Rush, Motorhead & Slayer doesn't even come close - this is truly progressive metal with as keen a sense of melody as any of the 70's iconic bands,and an insane array of weird time signatures & rhythms that go far beyond the boundaries of metal!

I'm simply amazed that Jason Newsted is bankrolling Voivod with his Metallicash. It's a pity that this CD, while being excellent metal, does not contain songs as anywhere near as strong as the outstanding "Nothingface".

Angel Rat

I love this album. I bought it when it came out and thought that it was good, but nowhere near as good as Dimension or Nothingface. All these years later I think it's at least as good. You can hear a bit of Siouxsie And The Banshees, a bit of Floyd, and it works. This isn't 'trash', it isn't 'punk' - it has a 'punky' energy. To call it 'Heavy Metal' would be an insult. It's deffinitely Voivod, but simpler, melodic, even my partner loves it. It's similar to the last two (Newstead) albums but MUCH more interestng with MUCH stronger material - and of course Blacky's contribution is essential to the REAL Voivod sound. Maybe I'm just an old romantic, but I wish there were more albums like this; if anyone knows of any, please let me know!!
