Warren Zevon's second album, and his first for a major label (Elektra), was produced by Jackson Browne and, after its release in 1976, became one of the classic albums of the decade. It featured the cream of LA's session musicians and harmonies from Phil Everly, Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, J D Souther and Bonnie Raitt.
While Browne had a languid approach to his music the angelic looking Zevon was a much more visceral, violent and caustic talent which Browne did well to contain. But no production could disguise the procession of pimps, womanisers, junkies and the insane that inhabited Zevon's fertile imagination.
From the opening piano led "Frank And Jesse James" to the majestic closer, ... Read More:

This compilation shows that "Werewolves of London" was mistakenly seen as a "novelty" albeit brilliant single.Andy Kershaw chose "Lawyers,Guns and Money" as one of his desert-island discs, and really any of the tracks on this CD would be worthy of such an accolade.

This stands up with Mr Z's best albums, and the title track alone is worth the price - one of the best songs I've ever heard. Buy this CD.
Release Date March 26, 2007
This is an outstanding and powerful album. The entire first half unfolds one masterpiece after another, although the whole lot are superb. This CD has bonus tracks too, including the haunting "I Need A Truck." Buy this, you'll thank me.

This is how a live album should be done. It's fantastic, electrifying, and hard to only listen to it once when you put it on. This shows just what a musician Zevon was. The passion that comes over is astonishing and does his great songs justice. This CD is more like an experience - I strongly, strongly recommend it.

I heard this album in its first week of release, which was around the time of Zevon's anticipated passing. There was, understandably, a tendency among reviewers to exalt "The Wind". It is still difficult to listen to it without being moved, yet Zevon maintained his ability to combine sober delivery with an unpredictable sense of humour. It is also difficult to listen to it without looking for references to mortality and there are many of those if you're determined to find them. But is "The Wind" really so good or were the reviewers just being sympathetic?
In truth, Zevon had been on a roll before this. He was already battling illness when he made the superb "My Ride's Here" and its predecessor, "Life'll Kill Ya" is no less impressive. "The ... Read More:

Although there are a couple of weak tracks, "The Envoy" features Warren Zevon in classic form. Referred to as "Excitable Boy" grows up when it was first released, "The Envoy" sounds quite good in the latest edition from Rhino. A pity that this wasn't released while Warren was alive. This album was available previously as an expensive import and key tracks were on Warren's two CD retrospective on Rhino but this is the first time (to my knowledge) that the whole album has appeared on CD. This captures Mr. Bad Example in very fine form indeed.
"Jesus Mentioned" played on acoustic guitar is very spare sounding thoughtful song about Elvis Presley and, of course, has plenty of Warren's humor in it. The title track is a killer rocker. "Looking for the Next ... Read More:

This has some fine material on it, including quite a few songs that are previously unheard and discarded versions of established classics that work very well indeed.
This is well worth buying as the performances on it are wonderful and show just how much work went into Zevon's craft. A lot of these are more intimate takes on his songs. Now that he's dead I'd say this was a worthy tribute and Zevon fans should check this out.
Release Date December 23, 1999
A fine collection of beautiful, moving, mesmerising songs. One of the best albums from one of the best songwriters - truly superb. The last track is one of my favourite songs from anyone.
Release Date November 11, 2008
Just one man and his brilliant songs. This is a great performance that hits the mark on all of these stunning tracks. Great stuff.
