Release Date February 21, 2005
I've only just caught up with this release from 2005, after loving the sound of Washington Phillips on an old gospel sampler. Full marks to Yazoo for issuing all the recordings (bright and clear, from 1927-9); and there are also some wonderful, unusual pieces at the end, especially Blind Mamie Forehand's 'Wouldn't Mind Dying', which alone would be worth the price. Phillips was surely the gentlest and most delicate of blues or gospel singers, his high, sweet voice holding the notes, then a melancholy fall to the voice. He accompanies himself with great skill on a homemade autoharp (a kind of zither). Hauntingly beautiful and very moving.
