The Best of the Waterboys 1981-1990

At their best, The Waterboys matched the brilliance of founder Mike Scott’s heroes like Patti Smith and Van Morrison, in creating poetic masterpieces with a spiritual essence/trancendent quality – “the Big Music” as Scott calls it. Examples are the dark, powerful Killing My Heart, the gentle ballad The Whole Of The Moon and the soaring Spirit. At their worst, they gave us singalong Celtic Folk like And A Bang On The Ear and others, but even these are rendered memorable by catchy melodies and the wonderful mix of instruments. Fisherman's Blues

Heard a track from this album on the radio which stopped me in my tracks - it was the title Fisherman's Blues so bought it loved every track especially Jimmy Hickey's Waltz however it is hard to name only one - a super album buy it and enjoy.......

Roam to Roam

I have just bought this reissued and expanded album. Room to Roam had always been my least favourite Waterboys album but I have really enjoyed this. I have played and played raggle Taggle Gypsy Live version till my family have threatened me with sharp implements.
If you liked this first time round you'll love it this time; if you didn't you may just surprise yourself. If you've never heard it before, give it a go. If you are new to Waterboys probably try This is the Sea or Fishermans Blues first

A Pagan Place: Remastered

This is my favourite Album (remastered) I sometimes think I am listening to Hothouse Flowers (another favourite of mine) although quite different musically I cannot recommend this CD enough it has a selection of 5 songs chosen by Mike Scott which were omitted from the orignal album so well worth the wait the tracks are in my opinion excellent all I can add is if you like this group of musicians not forgettng Mike Scott, it is well worth buying just relax, close the eyes and you will see what I mean - first class in all respects.

Room to Roam

I own most of Mike Scott's and the Waterboys music, and am thankful that there is such a variety and diversity of his work to draw upon, to suit my different moods. Yes, I love the big music, and yes, I also love his more meditational songs from Universal Hall.

But Room to Roam occupies the most special place in my heart. I played this album to death for about three years, when it was first released. It was the soundtrack to my life, and it even took me to Galway, swimming with dolphins off Dingle Peninsula!

Sharon Shannon was a crucial addition to the Waterboys line up at this time, and her accordian provides some real joy to these lovely, spirited songs. Many of these tunes have now become standards for any Irish session band.

The Whole of the Moon: the Best of Mike Scott & the Waterboys

Any best of album will invariably leave out some of your favourite tracks and this is no exception. But with so many great songs to choose from it's to be expected.

But this is still a first class collection of songs covering most of the group's changes of personel and genre. And for those who have all the albums there's still an incentive to buy this collection due to the inclusion of live tracks (A Girl Called Johnny & Rare, Precious and Gone)and a previously unreleased track (Higher in Time).

Book Of Lightning

The latest offering from Mike Scott and his Waterboys. This really did receive some wonderful reviews and was hailed by many as a return to form. For me, the form never went away, Scott just presents his work in different styles. Favourites here include the first single, the wonderfully buoyant "Everybody Takes a Tumble" and the moving "Strange Arrangement". Highly recommended collection of Waterboys work still at the top of their game in 2007.

This Is the Sea [Remastered & Expanded Version]

I have been collecting CD,s and records for over 20 years now and have amassed nearly all the classics ever made and I have played none of them more than This Is The Sea. It is still the most glorious piece of music I have ever heard after 20 years. To be a classic record means that every song has to be great, No Filler(tick 1), you never get bored of hearing it(tick 2) and the album flows perfectly . It's such a shame that Mike Scott hit his peak in the greedy mid 1980's when the excess of Duran Duran & Spandau Ballet were the fashion. If this album were released now it would be hailed a classic and would rightly be ranked with LZ4, Revolver, OK computer etc in the future, I jest you not. Fisherman's Blues: Collector's Edition/Remastered

"Strange Boat", "We will not be Lovers", "Fisherman's Blues", & "A Bang on the Ear" - This is how songs should be written and how they should sound. Scott lets us into his world and it's fantastic. The second disc is full of treasures. One of the greatest Waterboys albums.

Too Close to Heaven: the Unreleased Fisherman's Blues Sessions

In late 1985, Mike Scott went to Dublin for a week to stay with the brilliant fiddler and newest Waterboys member Steve Wickham. He ended up staying in Ireland for six years! During the first two-and-a-half years, Scott, Wickham, Anthony Thistlethwaite, Trevor Hutchinson and various other Waterboys and friends sporadically recorded an incredible mass of music - far more than could be fitted onto the Fisherman's Blues LP when it was finally released in 1988.

After keeping the plethora of unreleased material in the vaults for over a decade, Mike finally revisited the Fisherman's sessions at the beginning of the Millennium and released the first companion CD Too Close To Heaven in 2001.
