Essential Collection

by: Muddy Waters

Release Date August 07, 2000
Depend who this is supposed to be essential do-the newcomer to the Urban blues which influenced the British blues bands or essential as the biggest songs are here.Big via other people not especially Muddy who I don't think troubled the pop charts.
Which is besides the point-the pop charts are only a mirror to public taste.
In the U K Muddy waters was represnted in the 50s by a solitary EP which retailed at the same price as Cliff Richard or Elvis so it died a death and was only there because Decca were licensing product from Chess having only just obttained the catalog.
Muddy Waters was also a very unlikely artist to aim his music at the charts for the simple reason that while he may have introduced Chuck Berry to Chess he ... Read More:

Amused to Death

by: Roger Waters

Release Date January 25, 1999
After the unbelievably woeful 'Radio Kaos', Waters returned in 1992 with this masterpiece, which (IMHO) is undoubtedly the best solo album by any member of Pink Floyd - even better than David Gilmour's eponymous debut!

With this album Roger rediscovered his bite, and offered a great collection of songs relating to televised war ('Perfect Sense' featuring an awesome vocal performance from P.P. Arnold, 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range'), Tianmen Square ('Watching TV', accompanied on vocals by Don Henley), imperfection ('Too Much Rope'), and the decaying of western society (the album's title track). My personal highlight is 'Three Wishes', which includes eviscerating guitar work from Jeff Beck.

That being said, the album is not ... Read More:

Mozart: Horn Concertos

from: Great Recordings of the Century

Release Date October 05, 1998
I am often concerned when purchasing old analogue recordings, such as those in this EMI series, that there may be a considerable amount of background noise. Fear not! Dennis Brain's renditions of the vivacious Mozart Horn Concertoes are presented excellently here, with only a minimum amount of 'antique hiss'. The age should not put you off.

Besides this, Brain's tone is superb - clear and rich. His phrasing throughout is well-considered, and perfectly matches the spirit of the Horn Concertoes. I wholeheartedly recommend this recording!

The Anthology

by: Muddy Waters

Release Date August 31, 2001
This is truly a must-have for anyone interested in Muddy or the blues and why it took off in the way that it did. These awesome recordings give a great insight into what blues are and even seem strangley familiar after the years of listening to Clapton and the Rolling Stones, themselves having been influenced so strongly by Muddy. This is where it all really took off, with Muddy's slide playing ringing out so clearly above his emotion filled, thoughtful lyrics. Must-have!

Radio Kaos

by: Roger Waters

Release Date January 13, 2003
Undoubtedly the worst album with any connection to the Pink Floyd name. The fact that Waters did not draw from material on this album for his 'In the Flesh' tour, or his subsequent DSOTM tours, speaks volumes about the depths to which his musical output had sunk at this point in time. If he had stayed on with Pink Floyd then it is quite likely that the band would have eventually released this turgid material, thus sullying their great name.

Synth horns, at times excruciating backing vocals ('Powers that be'), and a typical 1980s production sound help to make the already feeble pop songs on this album unlistenable. To compound matters, the album concept and corresponding lyrical content are asinine.

Thankfully Waters resurrected ... Read More:

Electric Mud

by: Muddy Waters

Release Date March 20, 1999
I like the blues, I like the electric '50s Chess blues a lot and I like what people like Johnny Winter did with the blues in the '60s (I am thinking Second Winter here) and I really do like this album.

It is everything the other reviewers have said, it has wah-wah, fuzz bass, weirded out stuff and it has Muddy. It is also an album that is really very 1960s, possibly a bit hard for a purist but for a rock audience it works just fine.

With hindsight it works ever better, I think. If you think about what the likes of Sly Stone, Hendrix, Cream, Johnny and Edgar Winter, Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, Mountain and others were doing with the blues and R'n'B tradition then this album really does make sense. Bearing in mind where the likes of Jon Spencer, ... Read More:

In the Flesh: Live/Limited Edition/+DVD

by: Roger Waters

Release Date May 29, 2006
Stop Making Sense by Talking Heads is the accepted benchmark for filmed concerts. That might be more energetic and cinematic, but this is almost as good. It's very well filmed. The editing is slow enough to let us see the instruments being played, but not too slow that it becomes boring for the eyes to watch. Also there are no special effects to distract the viewer/camera operators so it plays a lot better for home viewing.

Musically the two hours of Pink Floyd songs sound great. It might annoy some that the female backing vocals are so loud and extensive, but I liked them (except on Shine On You Crazy Diamond). I like that the DVD favours the vocals over the music so the lyrics can really be heard without any difficulty. Also there are English subtitles, ... Read More:

Release Date February 11, 2008
Hip-O-Select are a specialist division of Universal Music. Unlike its parent company, it sells directly to customers from its website, but increasingly companies like Amazon have sold Hip-O-Select's releases from their own website. This has been good news for UK customers in particular, as we are one of the few countries that cannot order directly from the Hip-O-Select website. If you are interested in Soul/R&B and Blues from the 50's and 60's the company's cd's are going to be right up your street. The releases are usually rare and out of print LP's or double cd's full of unissued masters. The company has released a number of Lost and Found cd's for Motown (Four Tops, Supremes and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) and also the comprehensive Complete Motown Singles Box sets. The ...
