Or the "Red Album" if you're losing track as this is the third self-titled Weezer album out of six. It's also the first since the debut (the Blue Album for those keeping track) to see Rivers Cuomo slightly loosen his autocratic leading of the band to let his bandmates show us their own songwriting chops.
Things didn't seem all that promising at first; not only were there rumours that this album was to see a highly experimental Weezer but record label Geffen were apparently of the opinion that the album didn't have any hits on it. The result was Pork and Beans, the album's lead single and one written entirely as a sly knock to the label's opinions. "Timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts" sneers Cuomo, "maybe if I ... Read More:

This album was way ahead of it's time, a time in music history when there were only sonic war crimes on music store shelves.
All tracks are excellent - I can't find a track I don't like, which is very unlike me! I don't give stuff 5 stars often either...One of if not the best CD I own.

Weezer sound incredibly fresh on this frankly amazing album. What makes this a stand out album is it's variety, each song has it's own unique identity, which in part is helped by all members of the band taking a turn on vocals. I Defiantly recommend this deluxe edition over the regular one, songs like 'Miss Sweeny' and 'The Spider' are too good to miss. Favourite song on The Red Album? At the moment it has to be the motivational epic 'The Greatest Man That Ever Lived' but with such a high standard of songs on here I'l be on my next favourite soon enough. This album defiantly secures Weezer's status as one of the greatest bands around today!

Pinkerton, released in 1996 is widely regarded as a flop,it wasnt as summery and jovial as their debut which of course boasted the classic single 'buddy holly'.This album is a little more mournful and not as instant but still retains great sing alongs and a good dose of infectious melody, albeit,a little more disguised.
I first got this album on its release and loved it,it appeared to be heavier than their debut yet just as good, time has passed and the only thing that has changed is that i dont think it is as good as their superb debut but it isnt far off.
The album is littered with an array of classy little snappy numbers that have the power to imprint themselves onto your soul, this isnt a perfect album but it isnt far off, well worth your time.

ok so the comparisons to all the other work is inevitable, so how does it do?
well i would say very well. its instantly accessable and very, very, very catchy. the songs tear past at a frantic pace, riffs flying and melodies all over the place. ok so this isnt exactly complicated song writing but it is very effective as the songs will keep you humming the choruses for days.
plus the variety of song on display is as random as ever from straight up rockers like "hash pipe" and "photograph" to slightly more odd pop rock indie songs like "island in the sun".
this for me is easily one of the most brilliant summer listening albums ever made.
its no where as noisy as pinkerton and yes it is very short but they do say the best things come in small packages and ... Read More:

I think it's fair to say that most Weezer fans I know who adore 'Maladroit' dislike 'Pinkerton' and vice verse.I fall into the former.Whereas 'Pinkerton' sounds like a jam session,'Maladroit' is an unpredictable joy-ride,punctuated by hard-rocking belters and powerful pop songs. The guitar work on this album is superb and the tempo changes in songs such as'Dope Nose','Keep Fishing' and 'Slave' are addictive. The songs shoot off in all directions making this album Weezers most interesting and intriguing to date.

I am surprised by the number of negative reviews for this CD. I have been a fan of Weezer for more than 10 years and this for me is right up there with their best (Blue Album aside).
The song 'Perfect Situation' is one of my Weezer favourites of all-time, while the melodic 'Peace' and 'Hold Me' are also classics.
Not this should matter with an album of this quality but at that price it is a steal!

I feel that everything that I can say about the original album has already been said in my previous review of it. But I feel I should also review this version because, just for once, it's worth forking out for the deluxe edition.
The second disc of this package could be sold as an excellent 'b-sides and rarities' collection on its own. The quality is very high throughout, and far from tarnishing the original album, you find yourself adding 'Jamie' and 'Suzanne' to the tracklisting. 'Mykel And Carli' is almost as good, 'My Evalyne' is interesting if nothing else, but best of all are the Kitchen Tape demos.
These live recordings of songs which ended up on the album are fascinating insights into the band as a raw garage group, as well as what the songs used to be like ... Read More:

'The Green Album'had been compared to Weezer's first effort 'The Blue Album', and in the sense of its tight production, measured guitar riffs and formulaeic approach to poprock, this is true. It's also fair to say that it's nothing like the free-spirited, angst-ridden passion that made Pinkerton so infectious and intimate. This new album, however, does not feel like it will be the only album from weezer in the near future- it gives the impression of a set of songs that say 'We're back, enjoy this one for the summer, before we turn it up to 11 and rock your emotions to their limit.' evidence from recent gigs suggests that weezer are flowing with new material, and if it's anything as good as what's on this latest album, I'm a happy man. In short- positive, tight, a bit different, but incredibly refreshing.
