Strangers Almanac [Deluxe Edition]

I love Ryan Adams and Whiskeytown. There is something completely compelling about this record. At a stage when the band was on the verge of breaking up something magic happened and they produced what is probably the most complete alt-country (I'm not using the term Americana!!) release of it's time. I'm not going to pick any track because there are no turkeys on the great record.

It also comes with a 70 min extra CD of out-takes and unreleased tracks, many of which would put other bands to shame if they had been on the original release. Faultless.

This is definitely my favorite CD to listen to when going to bed, and I mean that in a good way. These songs are so gentle, and it's hard to believe Ryan Adams was like, what, 24 when he put this album out?

Faithless Street

I'm a big Ryan Adams fan and feel the man can't do much wrong throughout the various parts of his career. But I had a bootleg of this album for some time and slightly dismissed it as early, almost unfinished work that would be later surpassed in Strangers Almanac, Heartbreaker etc.

After buying this reissue version with improved sound and extra tracks I'm amazed by just how wrong I was. Songs like 'Here's to the Rest of the World' are Whiskeytown at their very best and they hardly put a foot wrong on 21 tracks.

Even if you're put off by some of Ryan's recent music ('Rock n' Roll'?) or don't like a bit of country twang on yer CDs I'm sure you'd appreciate this if you're at all interested in classic songwriting. Any fans of Dylan, ... Read More:

I'm with G.P. on this, it IS surely one of the best all time rock albums of all time & as such deserves the full 5 star treatment. It is intimate, moody, addictive, in places transcendental in depth of feeling. It has blown me away & has become an all time favorite.

I'm with G.P. on this, it IS surely one of the best all time rock albums of all time & as such deserves the full 5 star treatment. It is intimate, moody, addictive, in places transcendental in depth of feeling. It has blown me away & has become an all time favorite.

This is an EP of outtakes released,against the bands' wishes, after they had switched to a bigger label - the Geffen offshoot, Outpost. With five of the eight tracks clocking in at three minutes or under, there's just half an hour of material. Size isn't everything of course, but this is also a fairly patchy mix that doesn't present the group at their best. The closing track has the lyric: "I started this damn country band 'cos punk rock was too hard to sing" and it's clear that, on these songs at least, they are not quite sure how best to combine three chord dynamics with a good ol'country twang. So what you get are plenty of rough edges and strong evidence that they've been listening to a lot of Gram Parsons and Uncle Tupelo records. There's some lively hoedown ... Read More:
