Starkers in Tokyo

The idea of an "unplugged" Whitesnake album is appealing, and "Starkers In Tokyo" does feature a lovely rendition of the classic Deep Purple-ballad "Soldier Of Fortune".

But most of the songs don't really work too well in this setting. Coverdale's vocals are excellent, but Adrian Vandenberg's lone guitar just doesn't provide the musical backing that these songs need, and the extremely lean arrangement doesn't suit songs like "Too Many Tears" and "Here I Go Again".

Vandenberg picks more than he strums, and a rhythm guitar or two (and preferably an acoustic bass as well) would have worked wonders.

There are some good moments on "Starkers In Tokyo", but this is mainly an album for serious Coverdale-fans. Casual ... Read More:

This double cd is worth buying just to get the newly remastered American mix version of the Slide it in album alone which is basically tracks 2 - 11 on disc one, and the record company cleverly maintained the original running order of the American mix release, I truely feel its Whitesnake's last great album while still maintaining that bluesy style they are so famous for but giving it a really fresh rocky sound on the American mix, and until now have been searching high and low for a cd version of this let alone for it to be remastered, I was jumping around the room with delight when it came through the door I love that album that much, tracks like Give me more time, Guilty of love, Slow and easy, Slide it in are classics which still sound great ... Saints & Sinners

I much prefer Whitesnake's bluesy late seventies/early eighties efforts to their later pop metal sheen, and "Saints & Sinners" is one of the handful of Whitesnake records that truly deliver the goods.

The combination of former Deep Purple frontman David Coverdale's enormously wide-ranging sandpaper voice and guitarists Mel Galley and Mickey Moody is superb on raw blues-rock numbers like "Victim Of Love" and the classic "Crying In The Rain", as well as on power ballads like "Here I Go Again" (the original version, not the re-recorded pop metal version from the "1987" album).
