The majority of people will have heard of Will Downing as he’s been around a long time having been a session singer with Rose Royce and Billy Ocean.

His biggest hits were in the late eighties with Love Supreme and his interpretation of Denice Williams’s Free.

This is a mid price offering of some of his more popular hits/covers and would be filed in the soul jazz category.

The collection includesthe hits you would expect John Coltranes, A love Supreme which is one of my favourite records of all time, the love we share, giving it all to you a superb slice of soul with a killer bass line in the background. This is definitley a classic soul album from the 80's. He has a wonderful voice, and is tremendous live, and there is not one bad song on this album. Classy, jazzy and very soulful, if you like soul you should enjoy this !

Will is now a true jazz tinged veteran.Quite frankly none of his music over the last twenty or so years has been bad,if you like soul and jazz.His distinctive voice moulds succulent soul with a nice jazz tinge perfectly.This album seeks to keep everyone happy. It contains a return to the original flavour of Will (Love Supreme) via Lover's Melody which is a nice dancer and,hey, it has Roy Ayers on it.A bit of jazz scatting on the opening track which is a serious groove.A guest appearance by Khirk Whallum should keep jazz fans happy.Some truly marvellous ballads are in the mix including a version of one of my favourite Bill Wither's tracks-You Just Can't Smile It Away,truly beautiful but Will could not fail with this track.Will moves into neo-soul ... Come Together as One

have had this on album for ages (or more accurately my sister did, and I inherited it LOL) Firstly I would agree with the reviewer that the up tempo dance cuts don't really cut the mustard. But it's easy to see why Will was pursuing that route. His first CD/LP Will Downing was more of a dance oriented number, being that it was mostly produced by Arthur Baker. I think this CD was a turning point for Mr. Downing, as from this point on, the slower more quiet storm moments would take president in future cuts.
This CD also holds a special place within my heart, as one song in particular helped me deal with a broken heart. 'Too Soon' is the name of that song, and every time I hear it brings back that time, which, with the passing of time, I look ... Read More:

Stop Look Listen To Your Heart - shows where it went wrong (I think) This is a nice version of a great song.

Trouble is there aren't more examples on the album.

A soulful sax/voice duo covering well known soul standards might have seemed better than the rather obscure songs chosen.

All the Man You Need

Will downing is unique because of his subtle jazzy crooning that we have all come to love and crave for.However, this album removes all the sincere lyrics and jazzy undertones for a more commercial psuedo R&B feel, what a shame. Despite his picture on the box this is not a Will Downing album, avoid!
