I find it a little tiresome that fans of certain bands latch onto one album and expect subsequent releases to be mirror images of that particular favourite. What would be the point of that? I am not a huge WGC fan, but this is a beautifully spiritual album that rewards on every listen.I sold my copy of Let It Roll: that won't be the case with this one. Listen again!
Release Date June 09, 2003
This is a quality slice of 'Southern Gothic' that moves from the country folk of 'River in The Pines' to the Lambchop-like richness of 'Soft Hand'. Songs of loss and sorrow, hauntings and poverty roll by without a flicker of irony but variations in tempo and background make a cohesive whole that is always interesting. Compared to their last (Mojave) this album is a real step up, more varied and consistent. Highly recomended-my album of the year.
Release Date April 01, 2002
I had never realy heard WGC before,,but what a treat! The new west was never better..all darkness, texture and mood...not an electronic device in sight and conjours up images of the American west ...even in Stockport (which is some feat!)

More of a musical collective than a band, Willard Grant Conspiracy are based around the nucleus of vocalist Robert Fisher and guitarist Paul Austin who are joined by an ever changing group of musicians for recording purposes. As the sleevenotes to Flying Low say, if someone tells you they played on this album they probably did!. The album opens with the haunting Evening Mass which is one of the best tracks on the album, sounding as if it may have been recorded in a church, with Fishers morose Nick Cave style vocals to the fore. August List begins with what sound like muted bagpipes only to be replaced by equally muted vocals reminiscent of Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. House is not a Home is about the destruction of a house and contains the strange ... Read More:

Willard Grant Conspiracy began life as a collective of small minded bandwagonesque country boys but boy have they grown. Something wonderful happens when we hear the dulcid tones of this misanthropic textured vocal ensemble. Like a tear drop trickling down the spine in a cold room in winter, the guitars creak and soar until the body is in raptures. If you like alternative country then buy this, if you don't then buy it anyway. It made me cry with pleasure, i hope it does the same for you.

Six albums in (proper studio ones anyway) and WGC are still making music that surprises, moves and excites. I worried that they had run out of steam a bit around the time of "Everything's Fine", but "Regard the End" found them reinventing themselves with old folk songs and "Let It Roll" sees Robert Fisher establish himself as a songwriter of significant repute. There's a great deal of variety on this album from soft, gentle love songs to screaming frenzies about war and god knows what. I thought punk had done away with the point of nine minute songs but the title track is a rare example of a long, long song that never loses interest and maintains an increasingly frantic pace. I suppose WGC suffer from the fact that it is difficult to pigeon hole them ... Read More:

This is mostly good - but never really excellent, like the best of WGC. The "In the Fishtank" formula is a good one - independent bands going into a studio and recording half an hours worth of music or so, sometimes in a different style to usual, or in conjunction with an unlikely partner. In this instance WGC teamed up with Telefunk, an electronica group, and have recorded 6 traditional folk melodies. The first and last tracks are pure WGC, with seemingly little input from Telefunk. However, they are merely average WGC, and the CD only really comes to life when Telefunk provide a strong, pulsing beat for WGC to croon over, the best example being Grun Grun. Roll on WGCs next proper album - it's been far too long.
