Poet of the Blues

by: Willie Dixon

Release Date July 20, 1998
I was really looking forward to listening to this record but the mastering is so appallingly bad that nausea was seriously set in before I'd got to the end of the second track. I'm still going to buy other Willie Dixon records however I cannot recommend this to anyone. Even with my amps EQ cranked to minimum bass and maximum treble, the bass still over-powers everything, the horrible 90's reverb brought a tear to my ear and the limiter's threshold is set so inconceivably low that even a mention of crescendo and the whole sound is totally annihilated. Basically it makes me want to vomit.
It, sadly, cannot have been listened to by anyone at Sony Music Studios, CA.

The Chess Box

by: Willie Dixon

Release Date April 14, 1997
Willie Dixon is the featured performer on only six of these thirty-six songs.
But he is there on the rest as well, composing, producing, playing bass, and usually taking a back seat to stars like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Bo Diddley.

All of these songs are written and composed or co-composed by Willie Dixon, including classic blues hits like Little Walter's "My Babe", Bo Diddley's "Pretty Thing", Muddy Waters' "Hoochie Coochie Man", and Howlin' Wolf's magnificent "Hidden Charms" with its fiery guitar solo.

But there are many other superb songs here as well, including lesser-known tracks like the delightful jazzy number "Violent Love", performed by Dixon, guitarist Ollie Crawford, and pianist Leonard ... Read More:

I Am the Blues

by: Willie Dixon

Release Date February 01, 2008
This is a very enjoyable album to listen to on a long drive or on a warm summer evening, accompanied with a glass of wine. It provides no fireworks, rather a solid and thoroughly professional rendition of some of the titles made famous by others. Jim Morrison sounds much less restrained when he sings "Back Door Man", Ten Years After are more engaging on "Spoonful", and Muddy Waters really makes "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" rock. What Willie Dixon does in this album brings all of the above together on equal footing, and his deep, warm and husky voice is certainly something none of the others have. I don't have any of the other albums by Willie Dixon, so I can not compare this one to the others. On its own, however, I very much recommend it.

Willie Dixon-I Am the Blues [2003] (NTSC)

by: Willie Dixon

Release Date October 21, 2002
To see Mr. Dixon approach 69 years of age with such vigour & heritage when this was recorded is a magic gift. He is supported by a brilliant 5 piece band which is augmented by organist/singer/founding Big 3 member, Baby Doo Caston. There is a wealth of interview material interspersed with the songs and to hear everything from Mr.Dixon's point of view is brilliant. The minor point that holds me back is that only one song features Mr.Dixon's powerful bassplaying. Nevertheless, it is the man & his songs that naturally hold this spontaneous & honest glimpse into one evening of the life of a man who changed much in music as it is known today.
