I bet this was a fantastic live show - shame it sounds so flat on the CD!
Unlike the other reviewer I came to this recording as a fan of Willie Nelson. I think Willie sounds pretty good on the whole - I just wish there was a bit more of him! His regular harmonica buddy, Mickey Raphael, is the real star of the show for me - his soloes shine above everyone else!
The first two tracks, "Bright Lights, Big City", and Willie's own "Night Life", are the highlights for me. The lowest points being the two tracks associated with Hank Williams ("My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" and "Nobody's Business"), which, for me, don't seem to work in this jazz setting.
All in all, it's not a terrible album but certainly not ... Read More:

I purchased this having seen Willie years ago on the George Hamilton show with his long hair and Trigger his aged guitar. I wasn't sure whether Country was for me but I knew a few tracks and thought I would give it a try. It is superb in every way and is not the usual Country Music that we hear from Dolly and others. This is more Country Blues and some of the lyrics are sad and poignant whilst others are good fun. Willie is very versitile and I love this album and have since purchased others and DVD's of his concerts. I have yet to be dissapointed,a true professional and entertaning musician withso much energy. I am definiely a convert to Willie Nelson but I would say I am not a convert to Country & Western Music. My Mum, now 83, is hooked ... Read More:

True I have been a Willie Nelson fan for many years. Just at a time when you perhaps expect a drop in his vocal ability after all Willie is well past 70, the man comes up with one of the best recordings of his long career. A rich and strong voice, and a fantastic recording engineerhas produced an album to savor. The man even rocks it on some tracks. Wonderful must buy stuff.
I,ve never written a Willie review before and am not sure whether I should apply different criteria to septegenrians. Whatever I'll have whatever Willie's smokin these days because it obviously works. Another year - in this case 2004- another blinder of an album. The issue of duets always seems to bring me out in hives but Willie can generally pick em. I take it that he makes everyone fill out a questionnaire, the first question being "can you keep up with me". On this CD Norah Jones again shows (surprisingly) just what a good singer she is. Similar in tone to her duet with Ray Charles she pulls it off with grace (ooerr missus). Willie inhabits songs like warm jumpers although I doubt if Willie has ever had to wear one in Texas. ... Being a huge fan of Willie, Ray and Merle already I went and bought this the moment it was released. On it's own merits the album is very enjoyable to listen to, particularly the first disk which in my opinion has teh best range of songs. All three artists sound great together and, unsurprisingly the songs sound pretty much like a cross between Willie & Ray's 'Run That By Me One More Time' album, and Willie & Merle's 'Pancho & Lefty' album.
Merle Haggard said that this album is dance country music, so if you like pure country music you'll probably notice the perhaps over-reliance on the harmonica and steel guitar on most of the songs. It's not this type of music that made these musicians into the legends they are today.

Willie Nelson is an absolute genius, as original as he is talented and deserves much more recognition than he ever gets. This set therefore, is a must for all Willie Nelson fans.
As a long term fan, I must admit that there are some unusual song choices here, but all in all this is a great career retrospective.
As anyone in the know will tell you, Willie Nelson doesn't know how to make a bad record, but if he did, it would probably be the best bad record ever made. So do yourself a favour, buy this set, play it often and, if you don't like it, you clearly have severe mental health issues and should seek immediate medical assistence.

This is one of those rare pieces that is a set of ballads within a ballad, shaped as an album. I bought this when it first came out in vinyl and thought it one of the best set's I'd heard, and for me, the best Willie Nelson has ever done (all of it is great). Having been raised in the west and lived in Montana, the music resonates the country it describes. If you are a Willie fan and don't have a copy of this, I can't understand why.

I bought this collection as a gift for my father as previous purchases of discs by the Highwaymen have been very good... However this is not as it appears... it is a collection of recordings... some of poor quality, by each of the four artists which make up the band. It is not all of them performing together as we had expected... I am greatly disappointed.

I,m not a country fan(much) but was given this album as a pressie. I love it!!. I like every single track without exception. I play this when i,m at home alone and it goes down well when we have friends round. I,ts easy to listen to and made all the better by Willie Nelsons "one off" voice. Brilliant.
