This punk-inspired pop debut is a tour de force. Anthems such as "Denkmal" and "Muessen nur Wollen" sit wonderfully among faster, bass-driven, searingly hot numbers such as "Ist das so?", "Heldenzeit" and the iconic "Guten Tag". The oblique humour of "Aurelie" is a prime example of the astute songwriting of Judith Holofernes, whose vocals are as charming as the band's general musicianship.
A masterpiece of modern German pop, showing a level of musical integrity which would be considered special in the Anglo-Saxon market.

I first heard this band on TV, with their video for Nir Ein Wort and fell in love with them. They are such a good band, and musically are far superior to their UK counterparts.
However, tragically they will never be as popular as they choose to sing in their own tongue, rather than sell out and sing in mine. Which I respect more than words can express.
The language barrier doesn't bother me, I've been listening to Rammstein and Sigur Ros since I was quite young and neither of those bands sing in English.
Just remember that the words are only one part of the package, and in Wir Sind Helden's case, their musical aptitude and honesty more than makes up for that.

I was very disappointed with this album. I have the Heroes' first 2 records(of which their first is, I think, superior) and really like their continental take on modern guitar pop. This collection sounds bland and uninspired in comparison though, and I hope they can find some new ideas for their next effort. I have been frustrated by how little attention Wir Sind Helden get in the UK, but this CD certainly isn't the one to recommend them to a British record buying public who consider any music with foreign lyrics as 'exotic'.

Wire continued their exploration of electronics with their second LP of the 1990s. Reforming without drummer Robert Gotobed, who had been deprived of work on 'Manscape' and its subsequent tour, they consequently dropped a letter and became Wir (pronounced 'wire'). 'The First Letter' continues the easy science of 'Manscape' and Colin Newman and Graham Lewis's explorations of computer music which found later outlet in Lewis's He Said projects and Newman's swim~ label. There is however little of the pop sensibility that informs Wire's best works here, and while Newman can't resist bending kinky words to a catchy tune as always, 'So and So it Grows' (a joint Lewis/Newman construct, oddly enough) is really the only notable tune in the collection.
