Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari was one of those talented composers who produced only a small output of work, but those that he did are terrific and it's a pity they're not heard more often.

All of his favourites are on this recording: the suite from `The Jewels of the Madonna' is tremendous and the suite from `I Quattro Rusteghi' - also confusingly referred to as `The School for Fathers'- is delightfully sensual. Best of all, I think is the overture to `Susanna's Secret' in which José Serebrier conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with considerable style.

Highly recommended.

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari was one of those talented composers who produced only a small output of work, but those that he did are terrific and it's a pity they're not heard more often.

All of his favourites are on this recording: the suite from `The Jewels of the Madonna' is tremendous and the suite from `I Quattro Rusteghi' - also confusingly referred to as `The School for Fathers'- is delightfully sensual. Wolf-Ferrari - Cello Concerto; Sinfonia brevis

Hermann Wolf, born from a German father and Italian mother, decided to change his name to Ermanno Wolf Ferrari in the 1890's to stress the ambiguity in his ancestry. Before the Great War two of his operas had long and succesful runs in Germany. He was torn apart by the fact that Italy and Germany were foes between 1915-1918, his marriage ended in divorce and his financial situation deteriorated rapidly after 1919 and he obviously never recovered from the shock. He seems to have taken no notice of the changes in music and went on composing charming, late romantic pieces of which we find two on this CPO recording.
