Yann Tiersen's soundtrack is a perfect accompaniment to the film Good Bye, Lenin!, but also stands as a piece of music on its own. I was not previously familiar with his work but would heartily recommend it. You will like this particularly if you like post-minimalist music like Philip Glass and Michael Nyman (in particular some passages are reminiscent of The Draughtsman's Contract). After listening closely it seems almost the entire work is derived from one single theme, but with infinite variety in mood and instrumentation.
Release Date January 17, 2000
Nobody else sounds quite like Yann Tiersen. If you've watched the delightful movie "Amelie", you will no doubt have been intrigued by Tiersen's quirky, sly and entertaining score. Some of the music from the film comes from his back catalogue, and what a varied and individual body of work it is.
There can be no genre pigeon-holing for Tiersen, because he is very much his own man. Clever, intelligent, very musical, and not afraid to absorb classical/traditional and outright cheesy influence from French music of all kinds.

If you've come to read this, there are 2 possibilites: you are either curious of knowing more about Yann Tiersen after getting your hands on Amelie's soundtrack, or you already know his music and albums & want to venture a bit further. Whichever it is: just buy this album. I know you've read this 100's of times on Amazon, but I could not do justice to this (live) recording by trying to describe it with words.
I have had the chance to see Yann in concert about 3 times now, and I can tell you this is as close as you'll get to the real thing, except that he usually tours with 2 or 3 friends, and this was a one off: he had an entire orchestra of hyper-talented friends to bring more depth to the unbelievable beauty of his compositions. Ignore the first review above - this person has clearly mistaken the order in which Tiersen's work has been published! Amelie was merely a good soundtrack pulled together by the director Jean-Pierre Jeunet; not an 'album' conceived by the composer himself. Jeunet cherry-picked some of Tiersen's best music for the film, some of which originally featured here on 'La Valse Des Monstres' (as it did on 'Le Phare' and 'Rue des Cascades' - both equally great albums). Gems to watch out for are 'Le Banquet', and 'Cleo Aug Trapeze' - both evocative of music hall decadence! An even greater version of 'Le Banquet' can be found on 'C'etait Ici' which brings together Tiersen's best work on a double album of live performances.
Release Date October 01, 1999
This early Tiersen recording ('99) is a must for your collection. Forget for a moment that his music was used for 'Amelie', and concentrate on this quintessentially new age, French, sound. I quite enjoy the lack of toy piano here, and not least the atmospheric minimalism (which, I might add, is nothing like Philip Glass, in case you were wondering). 'Les grandes marees' and 'La terasse' are among the best tracks.
