Legend

by: Peter Roberts (Soprano Cornet), Yorkshire Building Society Band, David King (Conductor)

Release Date March 06, 2004
If you are a budding Soprano Cornet player playing in a British Brass Band and want to know what it takes to be the best, then this is the CD you should learn from! Pete Roberts has long been the best Sop player on the planet.

This CD is mostly a collection of the slower pieces, with only Escapade at the very begining being the exception. His smooth control, lyrical tone, and pitching are nigh on perfect. A welcome relief from the laser beams you hear from many Sop Players these days!

Its no coincidence this CD makes up the bulk of my top 25 most played on my iPod! And Ive over 800 Brass tracks!

A must buy!

This CD is ideal for first time brass band listeners and the stalwarts. As it is a cd which is appealing to the trained and un-trained ear. The beautiful sounds of brass culminated in this fabulous cd of the Yorkshire Building Society. Possibly one of the finest brass bands ever!

Essays for Brass, Vol.2

from: Polyphonic

Release Date January 05, 1998
It has been too long in the waiting, a CD by a contesting band of purely Salvation Army band music. Essays 1 was superb, however, Essays 2 is not so. Whilst the selection and quality of the compositions in superb, and there is no doubting what David King and YBS can achieve on a good day, I feel this CD has been rushed in its production. From the opening bars of Toccata - Oh the Blessed Lord and Quintessence, it is clear they have been too quick in making this disc. The most obvious 'blooper' is the last chord of the first track, Peter Roberts on soprano cornet splits the note, first by playing above the right note, then finally playing the right note. Having said all this, YBS are still a top band, and the performances aren't terrible. I would ... Read More:

Vitae Lux

by: Yorkshire Building Society Band

Release Date September 20, 1999
Vitae Lux is the brass equivalent of a quality "smooth classics" cd, with the added benefit that you won't have actually heard every single piece before! Its a good CD which I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend, but I was dissappointed that YBS have played it safe this time and haven't lived up to their ground-breaking, envelope pushing reputation.

Dr King once again flies the SA flag in style, with a number of tracks ranging from the quasi-test piece Shine as the Light (Graham) to some gentler numbers including the perennial favourite Share My Yoke played beautifully by Iwan Williams.
Other solos are included from the usual suspects, most notably Morgan Griffiths' soulful rendition of Be My Love. They are all fine performances ... Read More:
