Having just read the most recent review below, I felt I had to add my own tuppence worth. Having heard about them many years ago - I think Kurt Cobain may have dropped their name in some interview - they were one of those bands whose very name held a mystique, though in the pre-CD reissue and internet days, remember them?, it was a tricky proposition.
So seeing this box site for less than a tenner, I took the plunge and am now kicking myself for only now discovering the infectious delights of the YMG. Extremely spare and dry in presentation, the undersung vocals and 'feel' guitars are a blast of fresh air in these days of overwrought emoting. Give your ears a treat and get this box set. You have nothing to lose but your musical blinkers.

I feel in love with the tune 'Brand New Life" from a Peel Sessions LP I brought back in the early nineties. We talking pre-web here and I could find out nothing more about the band or their output.

All I knew was this fabulous tune, with glockenspiel drums and a single scratchy elctro-acoustic backing this huanted, huanting voice. And to be honest that was enough to be getting on with - it was instantly and still is one of the most affecting songs I have ever heard. Over the years I would hear the YOung Marble Giants namechecked by bands in the NME etc and gradually got to know a bit more about the band and their very short career. (It seems the Moxam brothers willfully finished the band during the recording of this album?!)

Correction to previous review: This is not a reissue of Colossal Youth or the singles. Instead it's collection of early demos and outtakes recorded in 1979.

Colossal Youth is available on CD, albeit quite hard to find, and of course new fans should go for that first. Since YMG released only 1 album, 1 single and 1 EP, however, if you want to dig deeper you have to go for this and the Hurrah live DVD.

I'm giving 3 stars because Salad Days is essential only to people already sold on YMG's unique sound.
