Genuinely beautiful, graceful, lyrical, calming. This is my favourite album of all time for good reasons. From John McLaughlin's wonderful opening chord, through the rippling Water Girl and moments of ecstatic musical discovery in Sunjog and Zakir. It's difficult to comprehend how the humble human being can create something so perfect and extraordinary. Truly inspired.

I know next to nothing about Indian music, except that I've been sometimes quite taken with random pieces I've heard, and even some Ravi Shankar at times (although, doesn't he go ON sometimes?) You've Stolen My Heart is a collection of various styles of Indian film music (although, all written by the same composer), and wasn't always an easy album to listen to for a 30-something indiekid like myself, largely because it's such an unfamiliar style - and it can be difficult to appreciate such a very different genre from the usual. Well what can I say really? Mclaughlin yet again finds himself in the company of serious musicans and as one would expect the results are awe-inspiring and at times transcendental.
In the past I have been a wee bit unconvinced with the idea of fusing electric guitar with instruments as acoustically delightful and organic as Bansuri and tabla. However, Shakti as always create wonderful and exciting music and rightfully show off their virtuosic craft. This really works and Mclaughlin truly pushes the guitar's rhythmical and improvisational capacities to the limit, but of John would we expect or except anything less?
