CD 1 = Kicks off with 4 tracks from a 1944 Joe Bushkin Sextet. This is pre-Parker music and may well be Zoot's first recording. Next there are two forgetable tracks featuring singer Harry Belafonte from 1949. Then we have 3 tracks by a Quartet featuring Toots Thielmans which are marred by scratchy 78 sound. These were recorded in Sweden in April 1950. The next 2 tracks were recorded the following day and sound better with a different line up including Lars Gullin. Having looked forward to receiving this DVD I'm afraid it did not live up to my expectations when it did arrive.

Zoot Sims is brilliant as is his heavyweight accompanying trio but the overall production leaves much to be desired. However this section is infinitely better than the Shelly Manne concert where the sound quality is awfully unbalanced which is a pity given that the rythem section includes the great Ray Brown as well as Hampton Hawes.

I think the DVD is over-priced and my advice is to rent it first before committing to a purchase.
