Unknown Hinson takes the demonisation of poor, white, trailer-trash to its ultimate hilarious conclusion. What if there was a guy as bad as all the tabloid headlines make out? What if there was a single man who was the distillation of every creepy deadbeat wifebeater that showed up on the trial-by-television shows? Unknown, take a step forward. This isn't played just for laughs, there's some real menace here, particularly in the lyrics of 'I Ain't Afraid of Your Husband...' and 'Foggy Windows'. But, this is a genuinely hilarious album, wrung out of spectacular insight and fabulous musicianship. It scores on every point. It's Country, it's creepy, it's fall-down funny.

I've looked at other 1952 compilations, as I was looking for some hits from this year and both those are rather less classy affairs which include all hits, but transferred from original 78 records. What is the point of this when the master tapes most likely still exist?
There must be some kind of reason, because on this more upmarket EMI collection (also available as a birthday card) the songs are a lot more obscure. I've no idea how these songs performed Stateside but there are very few UK hits for what looks like a UK-made CD, and the rest are unheard-of names. Nevertheless, the sound quality is much better here than on the aforementioned collections, even considering the available technology at the time.

Pure Diamond Hardcore Tracks. The scratchmaster and producer with their most famous tracks here on a double CD. If you've never listened to hardcore or happy hardcore then this is a good place to start. DJ Sy is simply amazing live and he is undoubtedly the finest scratch artist I have ever heard. Coupled with Unknown's excellent producing, every track is a winner. Hardcore is a much more fulfilling dance genre as it comprises all the good bits from other dance genres - namely pumping beats, melodic piano, lustral female vocals and out of this world bass-lines but without the pants stuff (like all garage 'music' and cheesy-trance). If you like this then you should really buy some tape-packs from good record labels (like slammin' vinyl). But for ... Read More:

If arsnic fails try Algebra, Pop Unknown. DeepElmRecords.
The first album released by the american indie/emocore band is a good example of well produced, well written, heart-felt music. With members from Mineral bringing that mystical sense of calm alive again, PopUknown boarder on the lines of 'mainstream' indie, but leave a sense of amaturism amoungst the well planned rifts, melodies and lyrics, somehow adding to its near perfection. However, the music does not seem to progress through the 11 tracks, which, in a way, kills its impact as there is no real climax to finish, instead the CD just runs to an end.
Related Artists: Mineral, AppleseedCast, Camber, Brandston.
