If you put Blondie, dub reggae, punk, new wave, disco, dancehall, electro, pop and ska in a blender and pressed the button, you'd come out with something approaching Santogold's debut. If that sounds horribly arty and pretentious, though, don't fear; this is also a brilliant pop album, topped off with buckets of Brooklyn cool courtesy of Santi's Ronettes-meets-Debbie Harry voice. There's great hooks aplenty and you'll be humming these songs all summer. Yeah, okay, it's so undoubtedly trendy I expect to hear it the next time I go in Topshop, but Santogold is so much more than your average NME-endorsed chancer and far far more than (as some have claimed) a weaker version of her pal M.I.A.- and if you don't know who that is, you ought to search ... Maxi Priest burst onto the reggae scene in 1984 and he was an instant success for UK reggae fans. Everything he did topped the reggae charts but by 1990 he reached no.1 in the US Billboard 100 with the hit "Close To You". He was now an international superstar. All his hits are here so it's a great album if you are completing your CD collection. It also features collaborations with artists such as Shabba Ranks, Tiger, Beres Hammond and Aswad. Buy this to remember how good things were before dancehall took over. (Not that there's anything wrong with dancehall reggae!)

Amongst my collection of approx 15 Ravi Shankar cd's, 'a morning raga, an evening raga' ranks as one of the best. Originally released in 1968, (with the same lineup as his groundbreaking and breathtaking performance at the Monterey Pop Festival* from the previous year: Ravi (sitar) Ustad alla Rakha (Tabla) and Kamala Chakravarti (Tamboura)), these 2 lengthy ragas find Ravi and Alla Rakha at the absolute peak of their powers.

Like the best of Ravi's work, the ragas are extremely moving and perfectly executed. Notably, the 2nd piece, 'raga mishra piloo' is absolutely beautiful and sublime in parts....it contains fantastic interplay between the sitar and tabla, the sounds produced convey every emotion....the musicianship is pure genius..

The Vedic and other Hindu chants included in this record are a part of many Sanaatan-dharmi Hindu homes in their daily devotional routines.

Tracks 4 and 5 also form part of prayer in many schools in North India. 'Asato Maa' is a prayer to be led from falsehood to truth, darkness to light, death to eternal life, and hence suits the pursuit of knowledge. This Tighten-Up compilation will put a smile on your face this summer, and might even make you think the sun is shining.

There is a definite progression to be heard as the tracks draw from the original eight lps in the series.

Reggae is still a relatively new concept in the first tracks, having just taken over from the slower rock-steady style in the early sixties. So the first few numbers are very R&B-like. Half way through the first disc the familiar bass thump is there and you know you're not in Kansas anymore.

I am a big fan of unlikely Reggae covers and there are some gems here. The theme from Shaft had me grinning from ear to ear. Bridge Over Troubled Water is pretty good as well.
