Heard all over the pubs and gig venues of the UK in the punk era, Big Youth's signature album is this one. Lighter in feel and sound than one might expect, containing an intoxicating mix of bass lines and subtle cymbal work plus that trebly, vibrating keyboard sound so loved in later days of Lee "Sratch" Perry and his Ark Studios artists (notably used on "Police And Theives" by Junior Murvin). Big Youth viertually narrates his thoughts over the top of this beat - more political than religious, often bemoaning the lot of the urban Jamaican in the mid 1970s. The Youth is not without humour though, as exemplified on the lilting, delightful "Natty Dread She Want".

Although this album is not quite the dub-heavy, speaker shaking stuff ... Read More:

Trojan has finally compiled all their gems from Big Youth recorded for a variety of producers in the late 1960s-early 1970s. So the best tracks of such classic albums as Screaming target and Reggae phenomenon are present. Big Youth's incisive ghetto talk over the greatest tracks of his era remains pertinent and impressive.
This compilation has some doubles with the 3cd Natty universal dread but is double as interesting and exciting.

This is a great overview of the more commercial toasting tunes that were issued on various labels by Big Youth during the seventies.This man is a God as far as I am concerned and the "entrance money" is justified when you listen to the astonishing 'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' alone.If your only reggae albums are by Bob Marley, then do yourself a favour and listen to some outstanding reggae with the most wicked basslines.Big Yout' is the man.

Well what to say about this one. Firstly the original album is the best example of an MC's work ever (And I include all Hip Hop). It was produced by a young Gussie Clarke who easily related to Big Youth as was from the same neighbourhood and of comparable age. Both greats of the reggae world this was an early effort and perhaps showcases there talents better than any later release. Big Youth's lyrics roll over cracking backing tracks (remastered by Gussie) of reggae legends such as Horace Andy, Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown. This Bonus version includes a lot of the original tracks aswell as Big Youth's versions. I cant recommend this CD enough. Even if you have the original this is a must for the bonus material. The greatest ghetto-dj Big Youth deserves a 3cd compilation but this one with his self-productions lacks a number of classics to be it. What there is does give us many great tracks but a few expandables one notably where Big Youth reverts to plain singing. So as a double cd this compilation would have been better and less expensive.
