I'll start this review with a) a confession and b) a confession.

a) I have never heard Portishead's self-titled second album. I'll rectify this sometime soon.

b) I'm somewhat wary about writing my first online music review and giving the subject the maximum score available. But, my god, this record deserves it.

This is something that I've been contemplating for a while now. What makes an album great? Does every track have to be excellent? Or does it simply have to take you on a great journey? Or must it do both?

The signs point to the third answer. And the third answer is fitting of Third.

I must admit I did not see this coming. I thought it was going to be seriously bad given that: 1) it's a 'side' project; 2) it would be a monkeys-type of sound, but without the monkeys; 3) music collaborations always turn to be rubbish. Then I read in a review "epic tunes" and I thought "OMG they are becoming like EMBRACE". Very confusing. One way or another I had serious doubts of buying it.
But then I decided to listen the full album through those 30 secs "pre-views" and I could notice the album was indeed different. So I gave it a try and I must say that I'm very positively surprised. Several listens already and loving it even more.

Konk

The album Konk is quite similar to the first album 'Inside In/Inside Out' but lacks the catalogue of summer singles to match its predecessor. The album starts off well with the brilliantly catchy 'See The Sun.' It is followed by first single 'Always Where I Need To Be' which is a great first single, proving the band can still write some quick, catchy singles. Following song 'Mr Maker' is good but not great, it is a summery song but never quite lives up to anything on the first album in my opinion. Next up is the rawer sounding 'Do You Wanna' which catches the Kooks in great form. It has a great guitar riff and is perhaps a future single. Seventh Tree

Am currently playing this to death! Love, love, love it, maybe even as much as Supernature. Our favourite song is Clowns and my husband keeps playing it over and over again!! It's a great album to chill out in the sunshine to. It lifts the spirit and makes you feel all floaty like :-)

I have listened to this album over and over many a time and it has not lost my interest at all, i love every single song. Each song is its own, not the same at all. If you liked the singles then this album is for you, there is only better to come. Buy this now!

The Seldom Seen Kid

If its true this is the last album, what a way to go. Gorgeous, uplifting, sublime.
Been a fan since Asleep, saw them live for this albums tour and knocked me out.
Please don't leave us, each album just get better and better. A true masterpiece.

Oracular Spectacular

it is so refreshing to finally have an album that simply is what it is. This is not trying to copy (thank god) all of this indy and emo crap that has contaminated the music industry for to long. This is a brilliant album with lots of twists and turns which allow you to listen to the songs over and over without getting bored. I am a lover of music and it feels so good to finally have a recently released album that is amazing. It kind of sounds like bowie meets daft punk for some songs and others i simply cant describe. Buy this album!!! anyone who gave it under 4 stars is simply insane. Also two other album i was very impressed by are The Last Shadow Puppets - Age Of The Understatement and Mystery Jets - Twenty One. Theyre all fab and well worth investigating.

Sunday at Devil Dirt

I agree with the previous 2 reviewers that the music is beautiful, the voices are a nice mix and the rhythmns and pace of the tunes are top quality. The real shame with this album is what appears to be the desire to make every line rhymne with the next irrespective of how weak the link to it may be. I've had to stop listening to it because it reminded me of small children's poetry.

I must be getting old because I bought this after reading a review in the Grauniad!!! But no regrets here- it's fun, quirky pop that put me in a spring mood, probably because of the reggae/Afro rhythms that permeate the tracks. The most obvious comparison that sprang to mind for me was actually with the Beatles because, like a Beatles album, the tracks are all a bit original and eccentric.
