These days, Ry Cooder is a musical novelist and I happen to believe that his format of album making is quietly revolutionary. Here is another great example of what a concept album should be like. Mysterious, Iconic, Intruiging and totally musical.
In an age where you select a few tracks of an album for a download, it's quite incredible that we have an artist who makes you realise what a lazy musical culture we live in.
It's time to wake up People !!! Music is still alive ...

Throw aside all your prejudices against world music, forget the half-baked Robbie Williams cover of "Bongo Bong", and enter the magical world of Manu Chao. Simply a fantastic album, all fits together so well, a beautiful blend of musical styles and influences. Make this the soundtrack to your 2007!

Like the previous reviewer, I would also like to start in questionable fashion... Why on earth are people comparing this to the likes of Play and Hotel? What you all fail to realise is that Moby release's albums centred around a different theme, a feeling. To call him an individual artist to a specific genre is wrong; the likes of Play and Hotel demonstrated his freedom to cross many different sub-genres, whereas this album, (as it CLEARLY explains in the CD booklet, if anyone even bothered to read it) is inspired by his days clubbing with friends until the early mornings around the late 80's/early 90's. 'Nuff said really.
The album itself is quite a refreshing change for todays market, inspired by typical Roland synths from the ... Read More:

'Buena Vista Social Club' is the Ry Cooder produced album of such melodic, harmonious, relaxed Cuban beauty. Each track transports you to another time and place and you honestly feel your cares drifting away as you listen to each song. From the wonderful album opener 'Chan Chan' to the infectious 'El Cuarto de Tula' and the delightfully mournful 'Dos Gardenias' and more, this album throws up delight after delight. Ry Cooder may have brought this amazing music to a wider audience, but it is the talent and passion of the musicians that shines through. A beautiful album that deserves a place in any music collection. Well worth a try.

I had to write a few words to offer a counter view to the guy who shows a complete lack of creative understanding of this album's raison d'etre. As for the comment about it being for, 'nostalgic, over 60's American males', well if you liked the recent Coen Bros movie, 'No Country for Old Men' then you'll understand the sentiments expressed through this music.
This is a masterpiece of understatement and contains some all time classics. 'Can I Smoke in Here' and 'Flathead One More Time' are condensed movies that create their own quirky mis-en-scene with believable, fleshed out characters, lamenting the onset of old age and the changes that are a comin'. There is an air of hedonistic abandon and black humour in some tracks, desperation and ... Read More:

If like me you used to dismiss music that was not sung in English, then buy this now and change your view on the music out there in the wide world. I got into Manu Chao by chance when I spoke to a very knowing person who advised me to try him out. Not many people have heard of Manu Chao presumably because he is just not written about in the British music press. The music itself as described by others is a mix of world music, sung in several languages including English. The songs just bring joy and addiction. I haven't stopped listening to this album since buying it. It is hard to describe what the music brings to me, but a smile to my face. I know that you don't need to know what is being sung about as long as the music is good, the music is great. ... Read More:

Manu Chao has always intrigued me. He makes extremely basic music with lyircs which are for the most part drivel - but his records are undeniably compelling. What makes Manu special is his inherant sense for a single chord and a line of Spanish or French that even those who flunked their GCSE can sing along to.
On Radiolina he's at it again, catering for those dreadlocked European backpackers who want their slice of world music. My problema with Chao is that he seems to insist on all this thinly veiled political rubbish. Does he really think he's making a statement with tracks like Tristeza Maleza and Rainin in Paradise?
It's a shame because when he puts his mind to it he's capable of penning truly excellent songs about feeling lost in the world. ... Read More:

I heard this album, whilst on holiday in Girona (Spain).
It is a must buy album. Even if you can't understand Spanish, she has a wonderful voice. It has a contemporary-jazzy sound without losing the traditional Espanic feeling. thanks for readind DaveyT.

Combining many of flamenco maestro Paco Pena's DECCA LPs to form this greatest hits CD, one can hear clearly hear the style of playing so prominent in the 50s-70s. All the styles represented on the CD are a joy to listen to, especially the less commonly heared ones of today such as Rondena, Milonga and Tiento; and the three Buleria are stunning. As an introduction to "proper" flamenco not the poor quality of Costa Del Sol tablao playing or "flamenco-inspired" guitar playing; Paco's Fabulous Flamenco touches all the buttons and does its job superbly. Highly recommended for all newbies.
