This is a great compilation but what really lets it down for me is the sound quality on the sideboard song which sounds very harsh, all the other tracks sound great. The other reason I didnt give 5 stars is because two great tracks have been left off, Thats What I Like and Strummin, Gutted.

To be honest the studio versions of the classic songs such as Poisoning Pigeons.. etc do not stand up well in comparison to the live versions and are not really necessary. One of the stregths of the live Tom Lehrer is his ability to work the audience; his comedic timing is just brilliant. The That Was The Year That Was songs are just brilliant! So if you are on a tighter budget then buy Tom Lehrer in Concert (which contains his two classic albums) and That Was The Year That Was for the essential Tom Lehrer. Who would have thought that topical satire, such as Send the Marines, could remain topical 40 years later? Pure genius!

Words fail me. Listen to William Shatner decaliming Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and marvel if you are on a bad acid trip yourself. Shatner is...well...let's say special. Nimoy on the other hand actually sings reasonably well, sometimes using his Spock alter ego. Truly a life changing experience.

So Shatner can't sing, so his Star Trek days are long gone. So what? Here we have a mature, self-aware human being who's been through some extraordinary times, but knows who he is, why he can be proud, and how not to take himself too seriously. Shatner doesn't sing, he talks the tracks, but each has something to say and is worth your time. You'll be surprised and rewarded by the effort. And then there's the opening track - a belting 'Common People', produced brilliantly, and with Joe Jackson's soaring vocals to drive it along besides Shatner's unique delivery. Strange but magnificent - I'm surprised how often I return to it as a 'favourite' track.

While I can't confirm the copy protection issue reported elsewhere, I CAN say this is a pretty good summary of his work.
It's not just a good collection of his comedy songs such as Tie Me Kangaroo, Jake the Peg and Maximillian Mouse, but also shows off some of his Australian "folk" songs such as Wild Rover and Waltzing Matilda as well as some others of his eclectic styles from the gentle Fijian Girl through to his recent bizarre Led Zep cover of Stairway to Heaven.
But how can a "Best Of" NOT feature his UK number 1 "Two Little Boys???" There are plenty of other best of compilations, so you may want to try Disky's compilation "Best of Rolf Harris".

I recently bought this album having read about Stanshall's friendship with Keith Moon. At first listen it is quite bizarre, but the exquisite rhythm of the prose rings through and with some great comic moments you're immediately tempted to listen again.
I can understand the other reviews suggesting that this album grows on you; I've listened to nothing else for some time. Stanshall's careful delivery, comic voices and incredible throw-away one liners mean that there is something new to discover every time.
In short, a masterpiece and highly undervalued both in pecuniary and cultural terms!

A good question, that.... there is nothing here that hasn't been issued before, either on "The World of the Goons" (which had all the Decca titles together with tracks by Ray Ellington and Max Geldray) and various Peter Sellers and/or Spike Mlligan compilations. Yet this is the FIRST time ALL the Goon singles have been gathered on one disc and as such is a must for the car or for relaxing to (or both, buy two!)
I have the original 10" LP of Unchained Melodies, and "The World Of The Goons", and the Peter Sellers Collection (where the EMI tracks came out in 1990!) and I still bought this with my own money!
If you are new to the Goons, this is a must buy.
If you aren't new to Spike & Co. it's still worth considering as a unique compilation.

This review, is in part a tribute to the brilliance of the reviewer below (Daniel Jolley), who has written one of the most persuasive passages I have ever read. After reading it, I immediately bought the record. There is no need for me to go into huge detail on it, but there are some points to be made.
However much one tries to deny it, you can not escape the fact that this record is ridiculous. It might be a better world, or i might be a better person if i could judge a piece of art solely on its merits. Try as i might, i can not get away from the fact that William Shatner is absolutely mad. The spoken parts of this album are, I would say, not actually acted. I honestly think Shatner believed he was Hamlet. Honestly. The music is by no means bad though, in ... Read More:

A math professor with a piano commenting on the happenings of 1965? Must be dated and dull? Far from it! And sadly, some subjects never date... 'Send the Marines' is a chillingly accurate description of the Iraq situation. And 'Pollution' is still among us.
Lehrer's spoken intros are hilarious, too!
Sample lyric: The protestants hate the catholics and the catholics hate the protestants and the hindus hate the moslems and everybody hates the jews but when it's National Brotherhood Week.....

I bought this while I was in one of my "let's see what weirdo stuff I can find this week on Amazon" humours, and to be honest I didn't even know this existed.
The best way to describe this CD is that it could be the first "seduction concept album" ever recorded.
Imagine the scenario, have the champagne on ice:
It all starts off well enough, preparing the batchelor pad for action with candles and music, you invite your lady in, complement her on her fragrance, pop the bubbly, then relax up close on the bright orange sofa. All very civilised until track 3 starts and she spits her champers out with enough force to knock you clean off your Cuban heels, before high-tailing it home in a taxi before you even have chance to straighten your pink silk kipper tie.
