This is the soundtrack of one of the best and most memorable films I have seen this year. The CD is a wondeful reminder of the beauty of Piafs singing, Cant wait for the DVD to come out if you can see ther Film It contains all the songs from the film except the French National Anthem sung while a child which I owuld have liked on there, there are many other titles that are not by Paif but nset the scene of her life.

The material on this CD is superb - Flanders and Swann were wonderful performers and superb comic song writers. Not only that, but they're clearly thoroughly enjoying performing - you can clearly hear Swann laughing away during Flander's monologues, even though he must have heard it all hundreds of times before. The material has a gentle, dry humour about it, which sems to be missing from modern comedy. Much of the fun comes from poking a little fun at day to day life, along with some very witty word play. Perfect listening for a wet sunday afternoon at home.
Though the material and performances are top notch - I have rarely enjoyed a CD more - I have to knock a star off for the rather strange editing by EMI. Each song has a short ... Read More:

Jacques Brel remains an integral and hugely influential singer/songwriter in the scheme of twentieth-century music; with his gloomy and orchestral tales of whores, sailors, tramps and harlots influencing everyone from Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Shane MacGowan and Nick Cave, to bands like Jack, the Divine Comedy and Pulp. Like those acts, Brel's music is literate and theatrical, unfolding in a bleak world populated by lost love, loneliness, angst, melancholy and despair, but with the darkness softened by witty arrangements, satirical motifs and moments of dark comedy. The atmosphere of the songs is rich and evocative throughout... so, like the work of his contemporary Serge Gainsbourg; the songs practically reek of cheap booze and cigarette ... Read More:

48 minutes of glorious Dresden Dolls madness. An excellent selection of songs with intriguing lyrics - the punk cabaret is growing up but it's still there with its tongue firmly in its cheek and a glint in its eye.
A few favourites:
'Dear Jenny' is a new song with the marvellous opening line of, 'Boys wear overcoats in the heat like this to keep themselves from showing..' - when was the last time you heard a song opening with a rationale for wearing a coat?
'The Mouse And The Model' is six minutes of glory for Brian going well overboard with his delicate and wild and careful drumming proving (if it's needed) what a great drummer he is.
'The Gardener' is a strange song, menacing with the threat of 'we will ... Read More:

As I am lucky enough to have the 3 Aznavour english CDs this was culled from, I would like to echo all the other reviews of the wonder that is Aznavour in english. I would just like to put in a word for the main translator of the words into such idiomatically correct english. The english lyrics are in the main the work of Herbert Kretzmer. He is now mainly known for the magnificent job he did on the english translation of Les Miserables, also lyrics for the Peter Sellers/Sophia Loren Goodness, Gracious Me comedy song. If you've a romantic bone in your body, this CD is for you.

Edith Piaf (1915-1963) was an unexpected artist, the child of a part-time prostitute and a circus acrobat, raised in a brothel, singing on street corners for pennies in Paris--until 1935, when her success at the famous Paris nightspot Gernys launched her to what would become international stardom. Notorious for her many ill-starred love affairs, attacked as a Nazi sympathizer during the French occupation, belatedly defended as a member of the French Resistance, self-destructing through alcohol and drugs, she proved as unexpected in her personal life as in her talents--but whatever the lady's personal failings, no one can fault her talents. She is, quite simply, the sound of the soul of France.

Having bought a fair few Marianne Faithfull collections, I was initially impressed by the range of material on this double album. Containing hits, b-sides and rarities from Faithfull's 60s recordings, it provides the most comprehensive compilation available of Faithfull's early output. I'd particularly recommend this collection to anyone who enjoyed the early material from albums such as 'Faithfull', as the heavily folk-influenced songs allow Faithfull's voice to shine while displaying less of the commercialised 'Decca sound' of singles such as 'Reason To Believe' and 'As Tears Go By'. These 40 songs showcase the best of the start of Faithfull's career, and form a beautiful, fragile, essential collective.

The Noel Coward Album
This album was recorded live in Las Vegas and New York between 1955 and 1956 and shows Noel Coward in cabaret at his best.
The album starts off with a medley of some of his most popular songs including 'I'll See You Again', 'Dance, Little Lady', 'Poor Little Rich Girl' etc and progresses on to some quite humorous songs such as 'Uncle Harry', 'A Bar on the Piccola Marina' and 'Alice is at it Again'.
Some of the lyrics of the songs have been changed to suit the audiences of the time, such as Noel's version of Cole Porter's 'Let's Do It'.
This album is well worth investing in, it has everything - wit, great tunes and wonderful lyrics.
If you are interested in vintage Coward, try the albums 'Compact Coward' ... Read More:

Okay, she's not the greatest singer in the world and she's not going to get a job as a concert pianist anytime soon but her songs have a kind of cracked charm that you can't help but love. I wanted to give this 5 stars just because I like to encourage this sort of thing but that would mean it was strong from start to finish, and I'm afraid it isn't. It is however, an original and noteworthy piece of work that most people will probably never hear - their loss.

Only three popular songwriters consistently both composed the song and wrote the lyrics. Two were Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, which puts Noel Coward in the most august company. But whereas Berlin and Porter were indifferent performers, Coward early on adopted a suave persona which was perfectly tailored to his material. In 1955 he wowed audiences at the Desert Inn, Las Vegas, and the following year it was the turn of New York to be taken by storm. These recordings have been repackaged in this 2-CD set, the first of which contains also a selection of 78 recordings, and a medley recorded in London in 1951. As if that were not enough, especially at this price, there's a 1952 track, and the second CD also contains nine recordings from 1954. Over 145 minutes of The Master performing his own work makes ...
