What a great album! By far and away their best, before they succumbed to Coldplay-type anthems on Seldom Seen Kid. Every track a winner, but "Very best" is well titled. Enjoy! Anyone that can get Stockport Supporters Club into the lyrics of a ballad is alright by me!!

After reading some mediocre reviews of this album I was shocked when I finally heard it and it turned out that I really enjoyed listening to it. It's clearly a step away from the first album, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This album has much more of blues, kind of Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan, feel to it, and I personally think that their vocals work much better together here, whereas the first album often felt like one or other of the vocal tracks had simply been 'tagged on'.
All of the tracks on this album seem to gel together very well, and although there aren't really any stand-out 'single' type tracks, I do not think that this is a bad thing at all.
It might take a few listens to really get into it, ... Read More:

i cant believe i hear this album now! having recently bought the brilliant Leaders Of The Free World I wanted to discover Elbow. Then I listened to Cast Of Thousands next which i included in my top 10 album list. but then I listened to this album and I was totally knocked off my feet! I just love it. this is music! reading other reviews I was deeply dissapointed they were compared to other bands. some of the reviews which compare elbow to say coldplay would have put off buying this record. If u like music then get all the albums by Elbow. Another band I thought I should recommend is I Am Kloot.

This CD is crap, the early black keys stuff is brilliant , this sounds like there are trying to sing Blue Hotel by Chris Isaak,,,i mean u had "the sound" and it was awesome ,some of the early stuff is just the best blues rock you will ever hear and now u got err what ? The same sound as every other crap band? New fans ? A producer?

i grew up in the next village to these boys and their first album is annd always will be,there on my top five must haves. like so many othere one-hit wonders, they have proved over the years that they peaked with the first absolutely magic album , and then the rot set in. this album no longer is filled with creative lyrics and must listen to riffs, other than bartender and takes clothes off. this is just dross and fluff for fans who know no better to listen to and pretend they love it. sorry boys , its time to let it go now before the real damage to your reputations is done.

I can only agree with the earlier reviewer, the pairing of Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan is a match made in heaven. Some unkindly dismiss Belle as the 'princess of twee' but not here, that's for certain. There's a strong sense of rhythm dominating much of the music, and wonderful arrangements; False Husband has a terrific Morricone 'spagetti western' sound, a lone guitar with reverb disappearing into some deep well, and then those sonorous tubular bells.
There's a good range of material, nearly all composed by Isobel, who also produces as well as singing and playing quite a variety of instruments. While the singing voice of the album is Lanegan's, it's definitely her project, and one that has real substance.

well i bought this expecting great things and for the most part im not all too disappointed with it. its not necessarily alkaline trio of old but its still very good. (for the most part) the first 5 or so tracks i love (just my opinion - you don't have to agree) but it does seem to tail off from there although there are still some good tracks towards the end. still all in all i think its a good album maybe not their best but still not there worst. definately worth a look if you love alkaline trio

I absolutely love the Phonics, but not this album. Described by many critics as a return to form after the turgid effort You Gotta Go There To Come Back. Far from it! All albums before Language. Sex. Violence. Other? are solid classics, never far from my stereo. This album though i find virtually unlistenable. Its just a lazy mechanical chugg along. Dakota being the one exception. A song good enough to pull the wool over the critics eyes. P.s. You Gotta Go There... is my favourite Phonics album.
