The first single from this album, The Winner Takes It All, is considered one of the group's best songs. It returned them to the top of the UK singles charts after an absence of two and a half years and six near-misses. The album itself, coming on the back of Abba's immensely successful 1979 tour, was a massive hit and broke records in advanced orders.
However, the rest of the album just doesn't live up to the promise of the first single. A new maturity was evident, with lyrics becoming more personal, but there are more fillers than classics here. I'm not a fan of the dreadful title track, despite the fact it was their last UK Number 1. Me and I and The Way Old Friends Do are also not up to Abba's high standards. Other than ... Read More:

I saw the film first and bought myself this cd afterwards. I love every song on it. If it's the music from the film that you want it's all on here. I'd highly recommend this cd.

i was walking through the streets of a small dutch town (either venlo or eindhoven) at the height of my obsession with this group, full of their music and images of the girls, next to my parents looking for something for my birthday, blissfully unaware that this was out.
Arrival had blown me away and the emotional response was just beginning to dwindle. so imagine hoe i felt as i walked past a record shop with the whole window deicated to this release; choc full of pos. in an instant i knew thats wanted i wanted (fuuny too, i was 13 on friday 13th jan 1978).
forget the (with hindsight) lame (but at the time awesome) film, this stand alone album is the groups finest. i cherish it to this day and it would still make my top 10. ... Read More:

Stumbled across Katy Perry by chance a few weeks ago, but now I am hooked! Great to hear a lady who sounds like she hasn't been sucking at hellium balloons.
"I Kissed A Girl" is definately the stand out track that most people will be familiar with, but fear not if you think that's the album's only strong material. "Hot n Cold" is a great track to get you moving. "Thinking of You" will tug at your heart strings. "Ur so gay" is a great giggle. "Whilst "Waking up in Vegas" and "Self Inflincted" are good ol' fashioned feel good pop.
One of the few albums I am happy to listen to all the way through, again and again.

I would give this a 4.5 if i could, but being a mathematician I have learned always to round up, therfore it gets the 5 star treatment.
Opens up beautifully and sets the tone for the next 4 tracks.
Mykanos is the stand out track for me and the highlight when I saw them live also.
Basically I would recommend anyone to buy this as I really cannot see what there is to dislike, the harmonies are perfect and the landscapes created by the lyrics are beautiful. Probably stronger than the album but you should just buy both anyway.
That's all I have to say about that.

This compilation covers all the 13 A side singles & 7 of their B sides during or after their period. The music is a mix of Country, Rhythm & Blues & Rock & Roll with a dash of Hard Rock thrown it & the Country Funk "Down On The Corner". The reason I'm giving this 3 stars is the fact that I'm not that into Country Music which nearly half the selection sounds like on here. My other gripe is that not all the B sides are here. Then again this got released on vinyl in 1976. On the other hand with CD technology (80 mins) they could of re-released it to include all the B sides. If you are curious about this band (like I was) I recommend this as a starting point. If you are a Countryish fan you can add to more stars to mine.

John Mellencamp is reported to have said of this album that "it's the best record I ever made", and it would be difficult to disagree. My personal favourites are 'Scarecrow' and 'Lonesome Jubileee' - I'm not sure if this is better, but it certainly runs them close.
Where 'Scarecrow' and 'Lonesome Jubilee' were rockers, however, this album might be called 'electric folk' or simply 'folk', as it's very acoustic. Some have compared this album to Dylan, but for me it's distinctive Mellencamp, at his most raw and gritty. His voice has never sounded better. It's a very dark and brooding album - death (and despair) get far more focus than life, love or freedom.
It's an album that grabs you at the first play, and makes you stop whatever else you might be doing ... Read More:
