Given her affinity for 1940's boogie woogie in the style of the Andrews Sisters, the idea of putting Bette Midler in a film that at least starts off during World War II seems like a natural. Indeed, you will find some nice period pieces by Midler, usually with Johnny Mercer's name on the composition, such as "Come Rain or Come Shine." But I have to admit to a slight sense of disappointment that the producers of this film seemed to go out of their way not to do anything too close to the songs that made the Divine Miss M famous in the first place. Ironically, the best track on the album is her wonderful cover of the Beatle's "In My Life," which deservedly made its way onto Midler's greatest hits collection. This is a solid Midler album, the sort ... Read More:

When we bought this in the sixties we (pleasantly) thought we had been ripped off, but this record contains perhaps the very best of S&G's songs, including April Come She Will and both versions of the Sound of Silence as well as Scarborough Fair, and there is also some accoustic guitar instrumentals which are worth having, and after forty years, I find the orchestral music great too. There is a particularly nice track with guitar and dark orchestra strings. This is a fine sixties record and I listen to it a great deal. It is delightful.

Having read great reviews for this album, after having listened to Headhunters and after having see him live in the best musical experience of my life in November 2006, I decided to by this album. Frankly, I was slightly dissapointed, but perhaps I had been previously spoilt by the offering of Headhunters and the amazing live performance. I do not profess to be a jazz expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I can only describe my own feelings towards the tracks on this album:
I found Palm Grease to be a rather protracted track and, while it may be unfair to compare it with the equaivalent first track on Headhunters, it lacked the mind-blowing high that Chameleon has. 3/5
Actual Proof is a very intelligent track which introduces ... Read More:

I've owned this album for more than 20 years, first on vinyl and now on CD, and in all those years it's always put a smile on my face when I've played it. From the minute the agogo bells kick in on track 1, I'm transported to somewhere that's hot, sunny and full of beautiful people.....
Standout tracks include the opener, "Brazilian Love Affair", which features an awesome Rhodes solo on the out chorus, perfectly matched by some classic 70s string-synth. Other favourites are "Brazilian Sugar" and "Sugar Loaf Mountain", which has some of the sweetest rhythm guitar playing you'll ever hear.
But having said that, there's really not a weak track on the album. Put a little Brazilian sunshine in your life and add ... Read More:

It seems like criticism to say that in the 1970s, each one of Herbie Hancock's albums was inferior to the previous one. However, it is more of a testament to the 1973 classic, Head Hunters than a judgement of the great man's career, and it is not to say that the albums that succeeded it weren't of considerable quality themselves. That brings us to 1975's Man-child; which followed the spaced-out grooves of Thrust. On that 1974 album, Herbie had changed his sound significantly from his previous effort, and in '75, hot off of Thrust's success, he had altered his style once again.
Man-child opens brilliantly with Hang Up Your Hang-ups, a funk-pop creation that could make the dead tap their feet. As well as snappy guitars, and blazing horns, this album-opener ... Read More:
